Memo To Boston Red Sox: Go Get One More Free Agent, There Are Plenty

D JonesDec 16, 2009

We hear the Red Sox need a 1B.

Well, guess what.

There are indeed plenty of free agent options out there.  But do we hear Theo Epstein getting involved with them?

Nope.

I don't understand this, honestly. Nick Johnson, Russell Branyan, Carlos Delgado, Hank Blalock, Adam LaRoche, Aubrey Huff, and Ryan Garko are some who would fit the bill to name a few.

Yes, some will come with a price tag.

Yes, some have injury histories.

Injuries are tolerable, in part because although Casey Kotchman... sucks; he seems to fit the bill for a backup relatively well in case of an injury.

Delgado, LaRoche, and possibly Huff and Branyan could have somewhat high prices, but Huff and Branyan are definitely manageable for the Sox.  I'm not sure about Delgado or LaRoche.

Branyan seems like a solid option, as does Huff.  Both may have pretty low averages (.250, .260) but they certainly have plenty of power, something we lost in Bay.  Hank Blalock can be included in this group too.

Or you could go Nick Johnson for a more solid, well-rounded guy.

If you can afford them, Delgado or LaRoche would be good options too.

As I said in my last article, I really like LaRoche in Fenway Park.

Here is the bottom line: The John Lackey signing was very good, and solidifies our rotation as the best in the Majors.  But right now, with the absence of Bay, I think we need another hitter.

If we don't get one, we will be forced to start Kotchman or Jason Varitek because apparently the Sox don't trust Lowell anymore.  He may be gone as well.

So either sign one of these guys, or be forced to start... drum roll please... Kotchman/Varitek, two of the most incapable hitters in the MLB!
