Penn State's Bowl Situation

Allison BailDec 2, 2009

With this weekend being the final weekend of the college football regular season, there is a lot of speculation of where Penn State will be headed.  To start the year, a lot of Penn State fans had some high hopes, thinking either Rose Bowl or even possibly the National Championship game. After two Big Ten loses, both of those options became a thing of the past; however the Nittany Lions are still in line for a good bowl game.

Penn State is going to find itself in one of three bowl games.  These three are the Fiesta Bowl, Orange Bowl or Capital One Bowl.  The Fiesta is somewhat of a long shot at this point, but it is still an option.

At this point, it is solely up to the committees of their own bowl games.  The committees get to pick who goes to each BCS bowl game.  It comes down to whether the bowl committees will pick either Penn State or Iowa.

While Penn State is the trendy pick due to the fact they travel well and will create tons of revenue, it will be hard for a bowl to pick them considering their loss to Iowa.  This Sunday the bowl pairings come out officially, so until then we will be stuck waiting.

If none of the BCS bowls select the Lions, Joe Pa and the boys will be headed to the Capital One Bowl.  There they will take on the LSU Tigers. This is not a BCS bowl, but this is still a very respectable bowl game.

Senior Andrew C said “it would be very nice to see us make a BCS game like the Orange Bowl, but I just don’t think it will happen.  Personally I think we don’t deserve it over Iowa, considering they did beat us.”

I would have to agree with this quote.  Sure I want to see us make the best possible bowl game, but imagine looking at it as an Iowa fan.  The Hawkeyes came into Happy Valley and beat Penn State, so obviously they clearly deserve it over the Nittany Lions.  The fact that Penn State might get the bid due to the fact of revenue to me is just unfair.   I hate to admit but Iowa deserves it.

With all this in mind, I think when it’s all said and done, Penn State will be taking on LSU in Orlando for the Capital One Bowl. This should be a very good game, as both schools are big time college football programs.  Also both teams have very strong defenses, which should make for a good low scoring football game.
