On Sunday, Sept. 7, the Philadelphia Eagles will begin the 2008 season. 53 players will take the field for the Eagles, and several questions remain as to which players will make up the 53-man roster.

Currently, the roster stands at 80 players after last week’s cuts. Looking at the positions below, and current roster numbers, some of the cuts could be tricky.

Quarterbacks (Three): Donovan McNabb, Kevin Kolb, A.J. Feeley

- The Eagles will carry three quarterbacks into the season.

Running backs (Five): Brian Westbrook, Lorenzo Booker, Correll Buckhalter, Tony Hunt, Ryan Moats

- The Eagles will carry four running backs into the season. The previous struggles of Moats will make him the odd man out.

Fullbacks (Three): Jason Davis, Luke Lawton, Jed Collins

- The Eagles will carry one fullback into the season. Jason Davis’s experience in the system makes him the leading candidate.

Wide receivers (10): Reggie Brown, Kevin Curtis, Jason Avant, Hank Baskett, Greg Lewis, Bam Childress, Frantz Hardy, DeSean Jackson, Jamal Jones, Shaheer McBride

- The Eagles will carry six receivers into the season. Brown, Curtis, Avant, Baskett, Lewis, and Jackson should make the cut.

Tight ends (Five): L.J. Smith, Brent Celek, Matt Schobel, Michael Gasperson, Kris Wilson

- The Eagles will carry three tight ends into the season. Smith, Celek, and Schobel make the cut. Wilson’s inability to consistently catch passes will be his downfall.

Offensive tackles (Five): Tra Thomas, Jon Runyan, Winston Justice, Franklin Dunbar, King Dunlap

Thanks for the Eagles update, they look pretty good this year. I'm glad Considine isn't going to be on the team next year, he's to much of a disappointment in my perception.

I would love to pat you on the back bro, but this article is not too good. First of all, Michael Gasperson is a WR. Second, you make good points, but there is something that the Eagles concentrated on that they forgot about the past couple years, and that is adding guys who play special teams. Boiman, Lawton, Klecko, Wilson are all guys who were brought to this team to play different positions and play special teams. You guy everyone of those guys. Wilson as a tight end, he is better than maybe LJ Smith. The guy is ready to play, and he has a good set of hands. He is big, can block, and most importantly he can play special teams. Also half the guy you say will be "searching for work" will be on this team's practice squad.
And last, WHO THE HECK IS JUQUA PARKER?

thanks for the feedback! some follow-up:

1 - Gasperson has taken on the tight end position, check out the below Daily News link from back in May to support the change

      http://www.philly.com/dailynews/sports/20080529_Eagles_-_Gasperson_tries_to_catch_on_with_Eagles_at_tight_end.html

2 -I agree with your special team comments. But if Lawton, Klecko, and Wilson can't make the team at their true positions the Eagles won't carry them just for the special teams. Davis and Lawton are equals and Klecko is too undersized to keep around as a DT. It's a shame because Klecko would have been dominant on special teams.

3 - Regarding Wilson, you may be right on this one...but multiple reports out of mini-camps are that Wilson has been a big disappoint with his inability to catch passess and the Schobel is excelling.

4 - Juqua Parker is Juqua Thomas...changed his name during the off-season. And William Thomas changed his name back to Tra Thomas. Eagles never make it easy!

oh yea, regarding the practice squad...

i didn't detail who i thought would make the squad because who really knows. The only names i mentioned that would be searching for work are Arrington and Fontenot and my gut is that a guy who wasn't even drafted (Arrington) and a player that has 1 total tackle (Fontenot) are not strong bets to make the practice sqaud...

yea but I think they know that it is important for them to have special teams, and they may hold on to Klecko, they did give him some guaranteed money, that is why he is not gone already. They also will use Klecko at the full back, just not on an everyday basis, like the Pats did.
Andy wants to be New England now. next thing you know he will have a video camera taping other teams walk throughs.
anyway, good work with the rosters. I pray that they put some thought into special teams. Because it has been a serious problem.
Is this Demps kid a possible starter someday? Maybe a replacement for St. Louis?

they say the Demps kid has great speed (could even be a kick off returner) and coverage skills...they question his tackling ability...best yet as far as replacing B-Dawk down the line...

If Wilson doesn't make the TE rotation I believe that they may find a spot for him on the special teams.
Kimo and Kleco will be cut. Demps will beat out Considine.

nice rundown, Chris. But I'm not so sure that J.R. Reed will make the team over Considine...he has a history of injuries and isn't even really a good returner anyway.
