Here's how I see it: The Longhorns deserve to be number one, Boise State should get at least a little more respect, Central Michigan is highly underrated, and why isn't Temple on anybody else's top 25 list? Things just don't make any sense. Here's my latest version of the college football's top 25 teams.
1. Texas Longhorns (11-0)
Last Week: 1, Next Game: at Texas A&M
The strength is this team is looking better with a win over the Kansas Jayhawks. Now let’s see how they do in the Lonestar Showdown against inconsistent Texas A&M. The Longhorns are now two wins away from the BCS National Championship.
2. Boise State Broncos (11-0)
Last Week: 2, Next Game: (19) Nevada (Friday)
Many might question this team being number two, but I don’t question it at all after grabbing 323 rushing yards in a 52-21 win over Utah State.
3. TCU Horned Frogs (11-0)
Last Week: 3, Next Game: New Mexico
If you think the Lobos have a chance at beating the Frogs this weekend, you’re sadly mistaken.
4. Florida Gators (11-0)
Last Week: 4, Next Game: Florida State
The Gators’ game against FIU was competitive at all, but a 62-3 win is a good thing to cheer for if you’re a Gators fan. Start counting down to the SEC Championship. It’s not too long from now!
5. Alabama Crimson Tide (11-0)
Last Week: 6, Next Game: at Auburn
Like the Gators, the Crimson Tide continue to roll along smoothly towards the season’s most anticipated game.
6. Cincinnati Bearcats (10-0)
Last Week: 5, Next Game: Illinois
A matchup against the Illini is the only thing that stands in the way of Cincy’s Big East Championship Game against Pittsburgh. Many people might expect an upset, but I’m not.
7. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (10-1)
Last Week: 7, Next Game: Georgia
A week off was well deserved for the Jackets. They learned that they will play against the Clemson Tigers in the ACC Championship on December 5th. They’ve already beaten the Tigers once this season, 30-27.
8. Pittsburgh Panthers (9-1)
Last Week: 8, Next Game: at West Virginia
The Panthers have their eyes on Cincinnati. Which means they could be sleeping on the very talented West Virginia team. I won’t be surprised if WVU pulls the upset this weekend.
9. Penn State Nittany Lions (10-2)
Last Week: 10, Next Game: BYE
A Daryll Clark 300+ yard passing game + an Evan Royster 100+ yards rushing = Nittany Lion domination. And that’s exactly what happened in the PSU/MSU game last Saturday.
10. Ohio State Buckeyes (10-2)
Last Week: 9, Next Game: BYE
A SIXTH straight win over Michigan, and ANOTHER Big Ten Championship. Things are looking pretty positive AGAIN in Columbus. Jim Tressel is a genius. It’s something about that sweater vest.
11. Iowa Hawkeyes (10-2)
Last Week: 11, Next Game: BYE
A BCS-at large bid is still probable for the Hawkeyes after an ugly 12-0 win over Minnesota last weekend.
12. Central Michigan Chippewas (9-2)
Last Week: 13, Next Game: Northern Illinois
Dan LeFevour lifts the Chippewas over the Ball State Cardinals, 35-3 as he throws for over 340 passing yards and four touchdowns. Central Michigan still gets my vote for “Most Underrated Team in the Nation.”
13. Oregon Ducks (9-2)
Last Week: 12, Next Game: BYE
Jeremiah Masoli accounted for all six of the Ducks; touchdowns in a 44-41 win over the Arizona Cardinals. Up next: the Civil War Game vs. the Oregon State Beavers, where the winner goes to the Rose Bowl. This is going to be good!
14. BYU Cougars (9-2)
Last Week: 14, Next Game: (18) Utah
Max Hall threw for 377 yards and five touchdown passes in a 38-21 win over Air Force. He now holds the school record for most wins as the starting QB with 30.
15. Houston Cougars (9-2)
Last Week: 17, Next Game: Rice
Another typical fall Saturday for Case Keenum. He threw for over 400 yards and five touchdowns in the 55-14 blowout win over the Memphis Tigers.
16. Oklahoma State Cowboys (9-2)
Last Week: 15, Next Game: at Oklahoma
They had to go to their 3rd-string QB to get the job done, but they still got it done. I expect Zac Robinson to play against the Sooners this weekend, but regardless of who the QB is, I’m leaning towards Oklahoma for the upset. Since losing to the Cowboys in 2001, The Sooners hold a 49-1 home record and currently hold a 29-game winning streak in Norman.
17. Temple Owls (9-2)
Last Week: 19, Next Game: at Ohio (Friday)
Travis Shelton was unstoppable in the 47-13 win over Kent State last weekend. He grabbed 156 rushing yards and two scores on only 18 carries as the Owls continue to climb up my charts as the 2nd-most underrated team in the Nation, only to Central Michigan.
18. Utah Utes (9-2)
Last Week: 18, Next Game: at (14) BYU
Utah only needed one half to seal the win over San Diego State. No it’s time for the Utes to get down to business. They got them BYU boys in Provo this weekend. Look for a slugfest in this one.
19. Nevada Wolfpack (8-3)
Last Week: NR, Next Game: at (2) Boise State
It’s not every week that you see THREE players on the same team rush for over 100 yards in a game. But Luke Lippincott, Vai Taua, and QB Colin Kaepernick did just that in the blowout win over New Mexico State. Now it’s on to Boise State, where the chances of an upset are higher than people think.
20. Nebraska Cornhuskers (8-3)
Last Week: 23, Next Game: at Colorado (Friday)
The Huskers can call themselves Big 12 North Champions once again. Onto the division rivalry game against the Buffaloes of Colorado, then the Big 12 Championship Game against the Texas Longhorns. If their defense holds up enough in both games, they could be enjoying a 10-3 record AND surprisingly a Big 12 Championship. Anything can happen.
21. Clemson Tigers (8-3)
Last Week: 24, Next Game: at South Carolina
So C.J. Spiller didn’t put up HUGE numbers like he’s used to doing, but who cares? The Clemson Tigers are headed to the ACC Championship. Congrats to those guys. Now, if they don’t lose focus against the Gamecocks this weekend, they’ll go in there a nine-win team.
22. Virginia Tech Hokies (8-3)
Last Week: NR, Next Game: at Virginia
Ryan Williams put up big numbers (again) in a huge win over NC State. He rushed for over 100 yards and FOUR scores! He also sets the school’s single-season rushing record.
23. Mississippi Rebels (8-3)
Last Week: 22, Next Game: at Mississippi State
A rather confusing win over the LSU Tigers, but the Rebels still got the job done. How about that Dexter McCluster? Over 140 yards AND a touchdown PASS?! Now on to the in-state rivalry game against the Bulldogs.
24. Oregon State Beavers (8-3)
Last Week: NR, Next Game: BYE
A 42-10 blowout win over Washington State, and now they get a shot at beating their most hated rival, a Conference Championship, AND a place in the Rose Bowl? If I were a Beavers’ fan, I’d be extremely excited up this team’s chances up to this point.
25. LSU Tigers (8-3)
Last Week: 16, Next Game: Arkansas
A confusing and hard breaking loss drops them nine spot in my rankings. Props go out to Jordan Jefferson and Terrence Toliver for each playing great games offensively.
