Clash Of The Titans: Nevada and BSU In The Game Of The Year

Michael PatmasNov 22, 2009

Congratulations to the Nevada Wolfpack who last night accomplished something that has never been done before. For the first time ever in college FB history, one team has three rushers over 1,000 yards. The Wolf Pack has the nations top rushing offense at 373 yards per game eclipsing #2 Georgia Tech by more than 50 yards.

Now the stage is set for the game of the year. Undefeated BSU takes on Nevada Friday in Boise. BSU is 8th in the nation in offense but only 64th in defense. Nevada is 2nd in offense and 25th in defense! Nevada has always been able to score big against BSU; 101 points in just their last two games. The Wolfpack even outscored BSU 31-17 in the second half of their last game. But their secondary was porous and they managed to lose both games by a combined 9 points.

Nevada is a very different team this year. The offense is still overwhelming, but even more powerful than last year if that is even possible. The biggest change though is on defense where Nevada is now in the top 25. The rap on Nevada has always their weak defense. I noticed something earlier this year that no one else is talking about, their defense has been improving dramatically by the week. Now, suddenly and unoticed, Nevada has one of the best defenses in the nation. Number 25 to be exact. And, this was accomplished against a much stronger schedule than BSU has. No 1AA on Nevada's schedule.

Despite all the talk about offense, this game will be won on defense. The smoke from Moch and the powa of Taua will be too much for BSU. Nevada 45, BSU 35. Nevada will enjoy their second WAC title in the past 4 years. They did share it with BSU in 2005 much to the surprise of many Idahoans. BSU's decade of "dominance" may be over.
