Creature vs. Creature Writers Pool: Picks for the Ford 400 at Homestead

The final race of the 2009 Sprint Cup Series season has arrived.

Jimmie Johnson needs to finish 25th or better on Sunday to wrap up his fourth straight championship. Teammate Mark Martin will be relying on a miracle if he’s going to overcome the 108-point deficit.

There are many other things to watch for this weekend besides the championship battle.

Carl Edwards is still looking for his first win of the year, after winning nine times in 2008. The same goes for his teammate Greg Biffle, as they head to a track that has been very good to Roush-Fenway drivers in the past.

Jamie McMurray, Reed Sorenson, and Martin Truex Jr. will all be making their final starts with their current teams before moving elsewhere in 2010.

And who will enter 2010 as our Creature champion?

The battle is a little closer than the one that Johnson and Martin will partake in, but doesn’t seem the top two will be trading positions unless a problem occurs. However, anything can happen.

Here’s who our Creatures are picking for the final time in 2009.

Ben Bomberger: Carl Edwards

This weekend the 2009 season will conclude and many believed Edwards would be the one hoisting the championship trophy—myself included. But as we enter the final weekend, the No. 99 team sits a disappointing 11th in the championship standings.

Edwards would like nothing better than to end the season with a win—again. At the 1.5-mile track in the heat of Miami, Edwards has captured one win, three top-fives, four top-10s, one pole and has an average finish of 6.4 in five races.

He leads all other drivers in average running position (7.3), driver rating (117.2), fastest laps run (111), average green flag speed (164.222 mph) and laps in the top 15 (89 percent).

I expect Edwards to bring home a solid finish this weekend and clinch the Creature Championship for myself.

James Broomhead: Matt Kenseth

There’s nothing to lose and nothing to prove for Matt Kenseth and myself this weekend in the last race of the year. Kenseth will have the new Ford engine this weekend, and hopefully it’ll take him all the way to another Homestead victory.

Mary Jo Buchanan: Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Since my third-place points position mirrors my driver Jeff Gordon and I'm essentially out of it as soon as Ben Bomberger and Kelly Crandall take the track this weekend for the finale in Homestead, I'm going for my dark horse.

My pick to win Homestead is Dale Earnhardt, Jr. Do I think he can win? Well, I'm not really sure on that one. But does he need some loving and some kind of motivation to get back in the game for 2010? He sure does. So, there you go Jr. Go get 'em!

Kelly Crandall: Kurt Busch

Kurt is my last shot at the Creature title for 2009 and he’ll also be looking for a last call in victory lane with crew chief Pat Tryson. We’ll both have a great shot at getting the win we both want as Kurt heads to Homestead with the same car that he won at Texas with just a few weeks ago.

Kara Martin: Dale Earnhardt Jr.

SM Napier: Kurt Busch

I just feel he'll have the Blue Deuce running up front and have a shot at the win.

David Phillips: NO PICK SENT

Jen Preston: NO PICK SENT

Rob Tiongson: Martin Truex Jr.

No pun intended, but it would be one heck of a sendoff from his longtime employers at DEI aka EGR to win the season finale in his last race with the No. 1 team. He has been suddenly coming on strong with his pole position efforts as of late and he's shown some of that promise that fans have noted since his only great Cup season in 2007.

Might be a long shot, but 2009 has been on of those wackier years.
