Redskins Stock Report

Mark ButerbaughNov 17, 2009

This is a new feature on DC Pro Sports Report, but youโ€™ll be seeing it every week. Weโ€™re going to discuss which players, coaches, or front office people are doing well and which are not. Itโ€™s called the Redskins Stock Report and we promise not to scream it in your face like this idiot. [We'll also get it right a lot more often than that guy.] On with the reportโ€ฆ

STOCK UP

Stock UpLadell Betts: He may not be properly appreciated by owner Dan Snyder, but many Redskins fans are coming to see Betts as the rightful starter at tailback. Betts followed up a 70 yards and 1 TD performance two weeks ago by rushing for 114 ย yards and 1 TD on 26 carries against Denver. Only the forceful intervention of Dan Snyder, President of the Clinton Portis Fan Club, can keep Betts off the field now.

Danny & Hunter Smith: How many full-time punters have rushed and passed for a TD in the same season? I canโ€™t think of any apart from Hunter Smith, who ran for a TD against the Giants and passed for one against the Broncos. Meanwhile, apart from PK Shaun Suishamโ€™s recent tendency to kick the ball out of bounds, Danny Smithโ€™s special teams units are out-performing the offense and the defense. Right now, the Redskins coach of the year would be a rout in favor of Danny Smith.

Backup Tight Ends: TE Chris Cooley is out with an injury, but his replacements have stepped up in his absence. Fred Davis has 14 catches for 154 yards and 1 TD since Cooley went down and Todd Yoder has caught 1 TD pass in each of the last two games. The Skins used a 2-TE formation last Sunday to cut off Denverโ€™s backside pursuit and it worked beautifully, enabling the running game to chew up big yards. A 2-TE formation should be used a lot next season by whomever is calling the plays in 2010.

Brian Orakpo & Andre Carter: The Redskins have 24 sacks thru 9 games this season, the same amount they had thru 16 games last year. Leading the way have been Carter and Orakpo, who has set a Redskins record for sacks by a rookie. Carter is 6th in the NFL with 8 sacks and Orakpo is tied for 10th in the NFL with 7 sacks. Carter seems rejuvenated and Orakpo is proving to be everything the Redskins wanted and more when they selected him with the 13th overall pick.

Levi Jones: The former Cincinnati Bengal was cast aside by the entire NFL and only picked off the scrap heap by the Redskins when all other alternatives had failed. In his first start as a Redskin, Jones solidified the left side of the line with LG Derrick Dockery, protected Jason Campbellโ€™s blind side and opened big holes for the rushing attack.
