Kevin Gregg Type-A F.A.

Bullpen BrianNov 15, 2009

Kevin Gregg has been classified a Type A free agent.

Basically, that means if another team signs him the Cubs get a first-round compensation pick.

Are you kidding me, what a steal!

Think about this, a first-round pick for a guy with a losing record, seven blown seven saves and a 4.72 ERA. Eh?

Of course, considering Gregg was suppose to saves games for a team destined for the postseason, it’s not all that funny, but interesting nonetheless!

Rich Harden, on the other hand, is classified a Type B free agent.

If Harden signs elsewhere, which appears highly likely, the Cubs get a sandwich pick between the first and second rounds.

Not that it matters, but I would’ve guessed Gregg’s and Harden’s compensation to have been opposite. Who knew?

Lastly, John Grabow filed for free agency earlier today.

Make no mistake, the Cubs need this guy back. He did a terrific job since coming over from Pittsburgh on July 30.

The bullpen is Chicago’s weakest link. You always need a strong lefty out of the pen, which Grabow consistently was last summer.

It’s a no-brainer, really.
