FBS: Lacking Dominant '09 Team

There has been a lot of talk about which non-BCS school will make a run at the title and if big conference teams can hold them off. The truth is, the two teams that play for the national title may or may not be the best two teams in college football, including a Texas-Florida championship game. This year, the controversy comes from the fact that there are no great teams, just a bunch of really good ones.

My top three

1. Texas Longhorns

The Longhorn defense has been very stifling this year, holding opponents to just over 12 points per game. With not much of a running game, Colt McCoy has had to throw the ball more than in previous years. He has completed a very high percentage, but has also thrown as many interceptions as games played. Not very impressive statistics if you ask me.

I know in years past the Red River Rivalry has been a game of huge BCS implications, but this year Oklahoma was depleted offensively and the Longhorns still struggled to beat them. They have shown to be slow starters this year against sub-par competition, so they are not exactly a dominant team.

2. Florida Gators

The Florida Gators were preseason No. 1 and because they have not lost, they have maintained that status in the BCS. Wow, if they are No. 1 then this is the weakest top team I have seen in a while. Their supposedly great defense and overpowering offense have managed to win only 3 SEC games by more than 10 points, in a year in which the SEC is way down.

They have no real deep threats and to me, are a one-dimensional running team. Also, their red zone touchdown percentage is less than 50%. If Tim Tebow has to throw the ball 35 times a game, the Gators will lose against a good defense, so they are not very dominant either.

3.Alabama Crimson Tide

Statistically, the Tide have one of the best defenses in the country  Their return game with Javier Arenas is also impressive. They have a Heisman candidate at running back.  So is there anything negative about Alabama? Oh yes, I forgot about the quarterback play. Alabama is a good 80-yard football team, but once they reach the red zone, their field goal kicker better start warming up.

In terms of red zone touchdown percentage, Alabama is even worse than Florida. Greg McElroy has had trouble finding his huge, highly-touted sophomore wideout Julio Jones. Because of the quarterback play, the Crimson Tide are definitely not a dominant team.
