Joey Votto Is Available, Make a Call Omar

Nick AdamoNov 13, 2009

According to MLBTradeRumors.com there is a good chance the Reds will make first base slugger Joey Votto available.

When I saw this I had one thought, Omar better make an attempt to bring this young superstar to the Mets.

Votto a left handed power bat only gets paid around 400 thousand a year and would fit the Mets nicely. He is only available because the Reds happen to have one of the best first base prospects in baseball with Yonder Alonso.

After dreaming of a mets lineup that could possibly have both Joey Votto and Matt Holliday surrounded by Jose Reyes, Carlos Beltran and David Wright I thought "What about Daniel Murphy?"

I soon realized that no matter how much I like Murphy he will never be the type of player Votto is, in fact I would use him as part of the Package to get Votto.

I figure it would probably cost a ton to land a guy like Votto right? Wrong, due to financial cutbacks the Reds are looking to get rid of pitchers Aaron Harang and Bronson Arroyo who are both set to make about 12.5 million bucks next year.

If the Mets are willing to take Aaron Harang and assume his full contract the cost for Votto will be relatively cheap.

I would start out with Daniel Murphy who lets face it really has no spot on this team but could work if he gets a chance to play his native third base, John Maine who would be a nice fit for the Reds as he can be a solid pitcher for very cheap and then I would work in some prospects.

Fernando Martinez is expendable, if the Mets sign Matt Holliday long term there wont be a spot for F-Mart for quite some time with Beltran and Francoeur taking the other 2 outfield spots.

Then I would add a Pitching prospect. I'm not talking Mejia or Holt but a Scot Moviel or an Eddie Kunz at most Jonathan Niese.

I'm not saying its easy but honestly it aint that hard, I know Omar loves some of the guys I mentioned but you gotta give to get and if we get Votto we will be an elite team.
