Type A Free Agents For 2010 Season: Infielders

Chone Figgins headlines the Type A free agent infielders after hitting .298 and stealing 42 bases in 2009 but his asking price may be too high.

The biggest name of the 2010 free agent season so far is Matt Holliday and he leads the Type A free agents who will be eligible to sign with another team on the 19th of this month.

Breakdown On Type A Free Agent Infielders

1B – No Class A free agents

2B – Orlando Hudson, Dodgers

– Felipe Lopez, Brewers

– Placido Polanco, Tigers

Hudson would have had even better numbers if the Dodgers hadn’t acquired Ronnie Belliard late in the season but still had 9 HR’s, 62 RBI’s and a .283 batting average.

Lopez had an excellent season with 9 HR’s, 57 RBI’s and a .310 batting average and missed having 200 hits by only 13 hits.

Polanco hit 10 HR’s with 72 RBI’s and a .285 batting average and is a .303 lifetime hitter.

SS – Orlando Cabrera, Twins

– Marco Scutaro, Blue Jays

Cabrera hit 9 HR’s with 77 RBI’s and a .284 average in his stints with the A’s and the Twins.

Scutaro had 12 HR’s, 60 RBI’s and hit .282 and established personal highs in home runs, batting average, on base percentage and slugging percentage.

3B – Chone Figgins, Angels

– Troy Glaus, Cardinals

Figgins had a 5HR’s, 54 RBI’s and a .298 batting average while stealing 42 bases. His power numbers are not good for a third baseman but his speed helps make up for the lack of power.

Glaus had no homers and two RBI’s while hitting .172 in only 29 at bats. If he can regain his form of 2008 which saw him post 27 HR’s, 99 RBI’s and hit .270 he could help the Cardinals if they retain him or any team that signs him.

C- Benjie Molina, Giants

Molina is the only Type A player among free agent catchers. Molina will be 36 next July so not likely to be signed for more than one or two years. He hit 20 HR’s, drove in 80 runs and hit .265 in 2009.
