NO RESPECT FOR BOISE STATE! IS IT THE BLUE TURF??

All over the Internet, on radio, TV and in the newspapers in seems as though Boise State just can't get the respect that their fans feel they deserve.  Oh sure, we hear the old stand by excuses of "but you just don't play anybody!" but a study of their schedule will show that indeed the Broncos have 'played somebody.'  Remember Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl back a few years ago?  How about Oregon earlier this season.  They didn't just beat the Ducks, they dominated them and they did so after they had beaten them in the famed Autzen Stadium last year too!  So they do play some of the so called 'elite' BCS teams.  Being a member of the WAC, it tough to schedule these 'elite' BCS teams week in and week out.  But why does BSU not get the respect that is probably due?  A thought ... is it the blue turf?

I've been in many different cities in this country in the past few years and when people ask where I am from I say "Boise."  Almost without fail, they will then respond with something like "oh!  Boise!  Where they play on that damned blue turf!"  Full disclosure here on my part is in order before I proceed.  I'm a University of Washington Husky.  I bled purple and gold (although in the past few years I think I'm almost bled to death - but there is hope. Finally!)  So don't count me as one of those crazed Bronco fans that can't wait to see the next game "on the blue" (as they say in Boise.)  Yes, I do support the Broncos and wish them the very best each year but I'm still a Husky.  Hopefully that qualifies me a bit as a somewhat 'neutral' observer.

Do I like the blue turf?  Well, frankly no.  I will admit that after watching many games played on 'the blue' I can say that one doesn't really notice it after a while.  I was disappointed when Boise State had the opportunity to change the turf when they bought the new one a couple of years ago.  Yes, there are other 'locals' here who don't care for it either.  But it didn't make any difference.  Originally they did it to be different.  To draw attention to the University with something novel.  But has it not worn out it's 'novelty?'  Perhaps so.

I can't help but wonder if the so called 'experts' (you know, the talking heads on radio and TV) just can't respect Boise State because of the blue turf.  Question here:  If the blue turf is so great, why haven't other universities put down their own colors?  How about the Huskies (U of DUB) playing on a purple turf?  Or better yet, how about USC playing on the maroon turf?  Or Michigan on the maize?  I note Florida has almost the same color of blue that Boise State does so why not the Gators on blue turf too?  Stanford's colors are red and white so why not a redo of Stanford Stadium with a red field?  They've got the wacko band so why not a wacko field too?

IF Boise State had the traditional green field would they garner more respect?  Just a thought.
