Come To Think of It: Bears' Offensive Line Is Going To Get Jay Cutler Killed

Watching Jay Cutler get sacked four times and hit hard at least seven times last Sunday has got me thinking that they may be taking Cutler out on a stretcher one of these Sundays if that O-line doesn't start to block.

Cutler took an especially vicious helmet-to-helmet hit to the chin that resulted in his tasting his own blood the rest of the game. He's fortunate he didn't end up with a concussion.

Say what you will about Cutler's decision making, or his mechanics, but don't question the man's toughness. He's been ridden hard and put away wet time and again this season, and he still gets up for the next play.

Jerry Angelo and the Bears brain trust signed Orlando Pace and Frank Omiayale to help fortify the line play. Give them an "C" for effort (taking a chance on Pace was a worthwhile gamble) but an "F" for results. Pace looks like he's washed up and Omiyale never did learn to play the guard position and has been replaced by Beekman.

The only reason it took so long to get Omiyale out of the starting rotation is pride. They didn't want to admit that he sucked for fear that the finger would point back at the guys who signed him.

Well, guys, the finger is pointing and it's the middle one. I'm sick and tired of the way Lovie Smith and this team operates in a cloak of secrecy and is so damn slow to adjust to the obvious.

Blame Ron Turner for his play calling, but don't blame him for the offensive line. Firing Turner isn't going to improve the line play. The sad truth is, other than replacing guys with other players who are already here, there is nothing the Bears can do during the season to improve the line.

And please don't sing me that same, sad refrain of "they need time to gel." This line has played together since mini-camp, through the preseason and now seven games into the regular season. If they aren't gelling like Magellan by now, it isn't ever going to happen.

And what can coaches teach veterans like Pace and Kreutz at this point in their careers?

The only thing left to do is to take out a big life insurance policy on Cutler. At least when he goes down and can’t get back up, his family will be taken care of, come to think of it.
