It’s official: Brad Mills is the new Houston Astros skipper.

According to MLB.com’s Brian McTaggart, Mills was named the new manager on Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 27, and his hiring became official at a news conference held at 3 p.m. CT at Minute Maid Park.

“There is no doubt in my mind we’ve made an outstanding selection,” general manager Ed Wade told Houston Chronicle’s Jose De Jesus Ortiz. “We’re working toward being a champion. This is a huge step to getting good and staying good.”

Mills spent the last six years working as the Boston Red Sox bench coach under Terry Francona and comes with a high reputation in the baseball world.

“This organization, this city, has a very good name in Major League Baseball,” Mills said. “They [the Houston Astros] are first-class in how they do things.”

Team owner Drayton McLane is also happy with the latest news and is upbeat about the upcoming season.

“Any of the four could have been a great manager for the Astros,” McLane said.

According to Astros Senior Director of Digital Media Alyson Footer, Mills and hitting coach Sean Berry are neighbors and friends in California.

“The thing I’m going to bring in is a freshness,” Mills said. “It’s a fresh voice, a new voice. We want to play winning baseball: that’s going to be our concentration.”

When Mills was asked to hold up his Astros jersey one final time for a photo, he turned it around to face front with some quick words for the media.

“Name on front is more important than name on back,” Mills said.

Mills’ tedious job will begin immediately, including putting together a solid Astros coaching staff.
