Baylor Bears' Road to Bowl Goal Is Getting Much Tougher

Denton RamseyOct 25, 2009

Mathematically speaking, the Baylor Bears can still reach their goal.

Realistically speaking, however, it’s getting a lot tougher to get to that bowl.

After dropping a 34-7 spanking against the No. 15 Oklahoma State Cowboys this past weekend at Floyd Casey Stadium, the Bears remain winless in the Big 12.

This is still the “Forever Optimist” talking here, but the scales are beginning to weigh much heavier against Baylor as they enter a key stretch in their season.

Yes, there are still five games left and there’s a chance of the Bears winning three of those.

Once again, that’s the beauty of college sports.

But they must start picking up wins.

The Bears must find a way to hold their opponents at bay and get that coveted first conference victory.

Baylor has a very smart coach in Art Briles, but there’s only so much that he and the coaching staff can do.

And the players on the team would echo my comments, I have no doubt.

The coaches put together the game plan; it’s up to the guys that don those uniforms to take care of business on the gridiron.

Briles remains a genius, despite Baylor's 0-3 record in conference play.

It’s tough when you lose key players to injuries, as any coach who has gone through that experience will tell you.

But true champions find a way to dig down deep and win.

It’s not too late to count out the Bears.

Baylor can still turn around its season, but Briles and his boys have got to find a way to garner a victory against the tough opponents that await us in this Big 12 Conference.

Right around the corner, Baylor has Nebraska looming as the Huskers hit Floyd Casey Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 31, at 11:30 a.m. on VERSUS.

After Saturday’s matchup with Nebraska, the Bears hit the road to face Missouri on Nov. 7 before retuning home to host Texas on Nov. 14.

One thing I love about this Baylor football team is they never give up and are going to continue to fight.

That’s what happens when you have a great coach like Briles at the helm.

Good things are in store for the Bears; it’s just a matter of the team picking up that first W and gaining the momentum they need to succeed in this conference.

These next few games will determine Baylor's season.

Let’s see if the Bears can’t get out there and surprise the nation…
