View From the Student Section: NU's Stunning Comeback Win Over Indiana

Aaron MorseOct 24, 2009

Homecoming for me has come full circle...sort of.

In 2006, when I was a freshman at NU, I witnessed Michigan State come back from a 38-3 deficit to defeat Northwestern 41-38. It was the biggest comeback in NCAA Division One history.

In 2009, as a senior at NU, I just witnessed the 'Cats come back from a 28-3 deficit to win 29-28. It's the biggest comeback in Northwestern football history.

I remain baffled by Northwestern football. There's really nothing else like it. Every week you have the potential to witness something historically bad (Duke 2007) or historically incredible (Michigan State 2007). But you never know what you're going to get.

There are four games remaining in the season, and I'm too terrified to make any predictions. They could just as easily beat Penn State as they could lose to Illinois.

On the first play from scrimmage today, IU running back Darius Willis took a sweep to the outside and ran it 70 yards for a TD.

Most of the fans hadn't even arrived in the stadium yet.

It was a shocking punch to the stomach, and it only got worse from there.

When a Ray Fisher kick-off return went for a touchdown to make the score 28-3, I threw up my hands and yelled "I quit!"

I didn't really quit...but some of my friends did, including my roommate, who left and walked home.

I never leave games early, it's just a general policy of mine, but if there was ever a game I was tempted to, it was this one.

The Northwestern offense hasn't looked good since the Minnesota game, how would they possibly come back from a deficit of 25 points?!

The recipe: a heavy dose of Andrew Brewer and Zeke Markshausen, some tough running from Scott Concannon on the final drive, and a hard-hitting defense that survived the loss of Sherrick McManis to injury thanks to the inspired play of walk-on Ricky Weina.

In both of NU's Big Ten wins, they've shut out the opponent in the second half.

Maybe that's something we can come to expect.

It would mean a better bowl destination than Detroit this winter.
