Braun Strowman Wins WWE 50-Man Greatest Royal Rumble Match in Saudi Arabia

Joseph ZuckerApr 27, 2018

Braun Strowman has made a big impression in a short amount of time in WWE, and his hot streak continued Friday as he became the first-ever winner of the 50-man Greatest Royal Rumble at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The Monster Among Men eliminated Big Cass to be the last man standing. WWE showed a victorious Strowman:

Strowman entered at No. 41, which was relatively late into the match. Despite that, he was credited with a whopping 13 eliminations. The former Raw tag team champion was far and away the most dominant wrestler in the ring.

He was also responsible for one of the lasting images of the main event, when he chokeslammed Shane McMahon onto the WWE announce table from the ring apron:

Even though he fell short in the end, Daniel Bryan may have had the strongest showing of anybody. He was the No. 1 entrant and lasted more than an hour (a Royal Rumble record 1:16:05) before Big Cass eliminated him.

One look at Bryan's chest, courtesy of Black Sports Online's Robert Littal, showed how much punishment he had absorbed over the course of the bout:

While the Greatest Royal Rumble generally had the feel of a house show, Big Cass' thwarting of Bryan's hopes continued a feud that has simmered on SmackDown Live. Bryan can gain a measure of revenge when he battles Big Cass at Backlash on May 6 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

Like Bryan, Titus O'Neil had a memorable performance. Unlike Bryan, it was for all the wrong reasons. O'Neil slipped on his way to the ring and slid all the way under the ring itself. Xavier Woods couldn't help but laugh at his colleague's misfortune:

It's certainly not the way O'Neil wanted to make his presence felt in Saudi Arabia.

Although Strowman's win earns him a special place in WWE history, Friday's result is unlikely to carry any significance. He was already one of the company's biggest stars, and WWE didn't raise the stakes by putting a world-title shot up for grabs, like in the annual Royal Rumble.

Still, Strowman will have sent the fans in Saudi Arabia home happy by besting the field.
