WWE Greatest Royal Rumble: Full Breakdown of Undertaker vs Rusev and Top Matches

The Doctor Chris MuellerApr 21, 2018

WWE will work toward its goal of global dominance of the pro wrestling industry when it holds its first major event in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Friday.

The show is called the Greatest Royal Rumble and will feature a 50-man Royal Rumble match as the main event, but that's not all fans can look forward to. Here is a breakdown of the card, according to WWE.com:

  • Rusev vs. The Undertaker (Casket match)
  • John Cena vs. Triple H
  • Bray Wyatt and Matt Hardy vs. The Bar (Raw Tag Team Championships)
  • The Bludgeon Brothers vs. The Usos (SmackDown Tag Team Championships)
  • The Miz vs. Seth Rollins vs. Samoa Joe vs. Finn Balor (Intercontinental Championship)
  • Jeff Hardy vs. Jinder Mahal (United States Championship)
  • AJ Styles vs. Shinsuke Nakamura (WWE Championship)
  • Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns (Universal Championship)
  • 50-man Royal Rumble

Since this pay-per-view is taking place overseas, fans in the United States and other countries will have to tune into WWE Network at 12 p.m. ET if they want to watch it live on Friday.

There are plenty of matches to look forward to, and the only belts not being defended are the two Women's Championships and the cruiserweight title.

Let's take a look at the top matches and their potential impact on storylines moving forward.

The Undertaker vs. Rusev

1 of 6

Following his quick victory over John Cena at WrestleMania 34, most fans assumed The Undertaker would fade away like he does after every 'Mania. We were wrong.

The Deadman will battle Rusev in a Casket match that has been the subject of a lot of changes leading up to the event.

Rusev was Taker's original opponent, but WWE swapped out The Bulgarian Brute for Chris Jericho before going back to Rusev a few days later.

Regardless of who he faces, the odds of The Undertaker losing this match are slim to none. Not only is it one of his signature stipulations, but Rusev is not being booked in a way that implies he would be considered to beat him.

Even with an obvious outcome, Rusev's athleticism should help mask Taker's physical limitations so we wind up getting an enjoyable performance out of both competitors.

The Tag Titles Matches

2 of 6

The Raw Tag Team Championships are without holders after Braun Strowman and Nicholas relinquished the belts following WrestleMania 34 so the latter could continue with his fourth-grade education.

The Bar was granted its rematch against whichever duo won a four-team tournament. Matt Hardy and Bray Wyatt emerged victorious and will almost definitely leave Friday's event with the titles.

Cesaro and Sheamus were drafted to SmackDown during the Superstar Shake-up, so having them win Raw's tag titles would make no sense.

Wyatt and Hardy are also beginning a new phase in their storyline, so giving them the straps would quickly establish them as a team to watch.

As far as the SmackDown match is concerned, The Bludgeon Brothers and The Usos will have another chance to deliver a show-stopping performance after their WrestleMania encounter ended in a matter of minutes.

Harper and Rowan need more time with the titles in order to be taken seriously, so they will leave with their reign intact and another win over Jimmy and Jey.

The Midcard Titles

3 of 6

The U.S. and intercontinental title matches may seem predictable on the surface, but WWE could have a trick or two up its sleeve when it comes to these bouts.

Jeff Hardy will put the United States Championship on the line against Jinder Mahal. Both men switched brands during the Shake-up, so The Modern Day Maharaja is on Raw and The Charismatic Enigma is on SmackDown.

The Intercontinental Championship bout features two men from each brand. Seth Rollins and Finn Balor represent Raw, while Samoa Joe and The Miz are members of SmackDown.

If WWE wanted to make this event special by having a few titles change hands, the IC and U.S. belts may end up switching brands.

Mahal needs the push that comes with holding a title more than Hardy does, and having The Miz regain the IC title would allow him to tie Chris Jericho's record of nine reigns and continue closing in on Pedro Morales' record for the most cumulative days as champion.

AJ Styles vs. Shinsuke Nakamura

4 of 6

One of the WrestleMania rematches we will see at the Greatest Royal Rumble will put Shinsuke Nakamura and AJ Styles back into the ring but under much different circumstances than their Show of Shows encounter for the WWE Championship.

When they met one-on-one for the first time in WWE, Nakamura and Styles were both heroic characters the fans could get behind. Once the match was over, The Rockstar showed his true colors by delivering a low blow to the champion.

He has continued to focus on attacking Styles below the belt in the weeks since 'Mania, and it has only made The Phenomenal One more determined to keep the title.

This is another situation wherein either man could leave with the belt. WWE is putting a lot of effort into this event, and having the top championship in the company change hands would make the show memorable.

Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns

5 of 6

One of the most surprising results at WrestleMania was Brock Lesnar's victory over Roman Reigns to retain the Universal Championship in the final match of the night.

It seemed like everything WWE had done with The Big Dog was leading to him finally bring the title home after Lesnar kept it off television for most of the previous year.

The fact Lesnar signed a new deal with the company likely led to the decision to keep the belt on him, but it may just have been so WWE could put off the title change for a few weeks until the Greatest Royal Rumble.

Making this event memorable is going to be a priority for WWE, and having Reigns dethrone Lesnar once and for all would accomplish that goal.

50-Man Royal Rumble

6 of 6

The Greatest Royal Rumble has been built around a 50-man Battle Royal, which is the largest match of this type in WWE history.

WCW used to have three-ring 60-man Battle Royals known as World War 3, but WWE is going to use a single ring for the dozens of Superstars who will be competing.

WWE.com has only announced 18 participants for the contest as of this writing, which means 32 spots are still open. The company will probably bring in a few legends and NXT talents to fill out the spots.

The winner will receive a special trophy, but there is no word on whether a future title shot will be included as a prize too.

The regular Royal Rumble winner traditionally gets to challenge the champion of their choosing at WrestleMania, but since that is not the case with this contest, anything could happen.

WWE might pick a complete wild card to win such as Tye Dillinger or it might use this as a way of reigniting someone who is struggling such as Dolph Ziggler. Regardless of the outcome, it should be fun seeing 50 Superstars trying to throw each other over the top rope.

Who do you think will win the Greatest Royal Rumble match?
