WWE 205 Live Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from April 17

The Doctor Chris MuellerApr 17, 2018

The Superstar Shake-up saw the Raw and SmackDown rosters changed significantly, but 205 Live looks just like it did before.

This might be because the cruiserweight division picked up a few new stars on the Road to WrestleMania, such as Hideo Itami and Buddy Murphy. WWE may have felt like 205 Live had enough talent as it is.

Murphy has certainly stood out in recent weeks with a string of show-stealing performances, so he might be next in line for a shot at Cedric Alexander's Cruiserweight Championship.

The only match announced ahead of time was a Tornado Tag Team contest with The Lucha House Party's Lince Dorado and Gran Metalik taking on Akira Tozawa and Hideo Itami.

Let's take a look at everything that happened on this week's episode of 205 Live.

Results for the rest of the matches will be added after the show.

Mustafa Ali vs. Ariya Daivari

Ariya Daivari hasn't been featured on 205 Live since he lost to Buddy Murphy in the first round of the Cruiserweight Championship tournament on February 20.

The Persian Lion wasted no time showing his frustration. He rushed Ali after the bell and pounded him into the corner with vicious rights and lefts.

Those two months sitting on the bench seem to have given Daivari a renewed sense of purpose. He looked more aggressive in this match than he has in a long time.

Unfortunately for him, being angry did not lead to a shift in momentum. After gaining control of the match, Ali finished off his longtime rival with his signature 054.

Daivari may not have won, but he looked better than he ever has on 205 Live. If the cruiserweights are getting their own tag team division, Daivari would make a great partner.

Grade: B-

Notes and Highlights

  • Opening the show with a narrated recap video is a mistake. It's like WWE is trying to make its shows feel like any other television program when it should be trying to portray it as a competitive sporting event.
  • I already miss Nigel McGuinness on commentary. He may be back at some point, but Percy Watson is an acceptable replacement for the time being.
  • The mask and glove Ali used for his entrance at WrestleMania made a return before this match. If he is Sub-Zero, does that mean someone is going to feud with him as Scorpion?
  • Daivari lacks the quickness to keep up with most of the cruiserweights. It's his biggest obstacle to overcome.

The Brian Kendrick and Jack Gallagher vs. Two Jobbers

The Brian Kendrick and Jack Gallagher make an interesting combination.
The Brian Kendrick and Jack Gallagher make an interesting combination.

The Brian Kendrick returned to the ring for the first time since being injured by Itami. He tag-teamed with Jack Gallagher against two local talents.

This whole match was just an excuse for Gallagher and Kendrick to re-establish themselves as dangerous competitors, and they accomplished their goal with ease.

The Wizard of Odd hasn't lost a step during his hiatus. His speed, agility and brutality were on full display against the two men unlucky enough to be his opponents.

The former cruiserweight champions defeated their opponents in just a few minutes, saving us from having to watch the jobbers take any more punishment.

Grade: C-

Notes and Highlights

  • Buddy Murphy was shown failing to make weight in a backstage video. General manager Drake Maverick booked a gauntlet match for next week to see who gets to face Cedric Alexander at the Greatest Royal Rumble for the cruiserweight title.
  • Gallagher and Kendrick are both fantastic heels, but their partnership is still strange. They don't have enough in common. Maybe they will develop more chemistry with time.

Lucha House Party vs. Hideo Itami and Akira Tozawa

3 of 3
Hideo Itami, Akira Tozawa, Gran Metalik and Lince Dorado

Itami and Tozawa were on their way to the ring, but Metalik and Dorado didn't want to wait and attacked them in the aisle.

The Tornado Tag Team stipulation is not used as much as it was in the old days, but it still makes for an exciting contest because all four men are in the ring at the same time.

Everyone was involved in several different spots to make this a fun and exciting main event. Tozawa and Itami may not technically be heels right now, but they were definitely the more aggressive duo.

Tozawa and Itami had Dorado and Metalik locked in different submission at one point, but the masked Superstars managed to avoid tapping out.

205 Live has been delivering match-of-the-week main events for the past month, and this one was no exception. All four men put forth their best efforts to send the crowd home happy.

After a fast and furious exchange of strikes and finishing moves, Tozawa accidentally kicked his own partner and allowed Metalik and Dorado to hit an elbow drop and a shooting star press to get simultaneous pins. Kalisto ran down to celebrate with his friends to close the show.

Grade: A-

Notes and Highlights

  • Metalik's black attire was awesome. He looked like an assassin.
  • If Itami and Tozawa are going to remain a team, they should start coordinating their attire. A good tag team should match.
  • Itami trying to rip his opponent's mask off is a fantastic way to portray him as a villain.
  • There was a weird moment when Metalik was just walking around the ring while Dorado was being decimated by Itami and Tozawa.
  • A springboard moonsault to the floor is always cool, but two being performed at the same time is amazing.
  • Dorado caught Itami with a stiff kick to the eye when he broke up a pin.
