WWE WrestleMania 2018 Results: Matches Fans Will Be Rewatching for Years
WrestleMania 34 may be in the history books but the show will live on forever thanks to a few matches that fans will rewatch for years to come.
Like other editions of The Showcase of the Immortals, this year's spectacular produced a few bouts that epitomized the grandeur, spectacle and athleticism so readily associated with the extravaganza.
From championship bouts to special attraction tag team events featuring world-renowned sports icons, these are the matches that will define WrestleMania 34 and be on WWE Network playlists every year.
Ronda Rousey and Kurt Angle vs. Triple H and Stephanie McMahon
The best bout on the WrestleMania card was the tag team match pitting Olympic medalists Kurt Angle and Ronda Rousey against The Authority's Triple H and Stephanie McMahon.
A perfect example of a match in which smoke and mirrors were essential to its overall quality, it portrayed Rousey as an absolute badass in her first professional wrestling match.
The former UFC star was fearless in the face of confrontation by The Game and even trapped him in her vaunted armbar.
She tossed Stephanie McMahon around the ring and eventually submitted her to the same armbar.
Perfectly executed by the performers involved, with complete selflessness from Triple H and superb heel work by McMahon, the match put Rousey over as an enormous star. The result was an extraordinary match that popped the crowd and exceeded all expectations.
The definitive match of the 2018 spectacular.
Triple Threat Match for the Intercontinental Championship
Arguably the best traditional match on the entire show saw intercontinental champion The Miz defend against Finn Balor and Seth Rollins in a Triple Threat match. The bout kicked off the main card and set the bar high for the rest of the show.
The athleticism and action within, the great heel work by The Miz and the satisfying outcome of Rollins scoring the win, his first Intercontinental Championship and Grand Slam recognition came together to create an explosive opener that got fans invested in the night's festivities from the get-go.
The finish, in particular, enhanced the match.
Balor scaled the ropes and came off with the Coup de Grace to Miz, only to fall victim to a Curb Stomp. Rollins followed up with another to Miz and pinned The Hollywood A-Lister, much to the delight of the 78,000-plus in attendance who wanted to see the loudmouthed villain get his comeuppance.
The Architect celebrating his historic victory was the perfect capper on a superb match and a great way to kick off the five-hour extravaganza on pay-per-view.
SmackDown Women's Championship Match
For the better part of three years, Asuka rolled through the competition in NXT and on Raw, beating every single competitor put before her. Her undefeated streak eclipsed that of new Hall of Famer Goldberg and created an aura about her that left fans wondering who could believably beat her.
They got their answer Sunday night when Charlotte tapped The Empress of Tomorrow out to the Figure Eight, successfully retaining her SmackDown Women's Championship and etching her name in the history books.
A physically intense match that saw the women put everything on the line in hopes of leaving with championship gold around their waists, it captivated fans and led to the unforgettable moment in which Asuka tapped out and writhed in pain, her historic win streak snapped by her second-generation opponent.
The historic nature of the bout will keep fans watching for years, debating whether the right decision was made.
For that reason alone, the match is an iconic part of the 34th incarnation of WrestleMania.
John Cena vs. The Undertaker
It is not everyday that the franchise star of WWE loses a match at WrestleMania in just 2:45 yet that is exactly what happened Sunday when John Cena came face-to-face with The Deadman.
After weeks of taunting The Phenom, poking and prodding at him with insults that questioned his manhood, Cena faced the fury of Undertaker, enduring a chokeslam and Tombstone piledriver that ended his night in short order.
The brevity of the match coupled with the storyline leading into it—and Cena's scared-as-hell expressions—came together to create a spectacle that was a fun watch, even if it wasn't the classic everyone had hoped for.
