WWE WrestleMania 34 Results: Worst Booking Decisions and Missed Opportunities

Aaron BowerApr 10, 2018

It's fair to say WWE WrestleMania 34 was a mixed bag.

On one hand, there was a huge heap of standout, electrifying moments that will live long in the memory.

But they were intertwined in and among a series of missed booking opportunities for the company on its biggest night of the year.

From the wrong results, to moments in matches that could have been executed a lot better, WrestleMania was a show that perhaps could have been much better.

Here's a look at the biggest missed booking opportunities and wrong booking decisions on the night.

No Surprises/Debuts in the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal

1 of 4

Perhaps it's not the biggest surprise in the world given how the match was confined to the pre-show—but there felt like room for at least one or two surprises in the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal this year.

With a number of guys ready to return from injury, including stars like Big Cass, this could have been an ideal way to integrate them back into television and give them a WrestleMania moment.

Similarly, there are a number of stars in NXT who would have surely benefitted from stepping up to the main roster for one night.

Matt Hardy was a decent enough choice as the winner, given his current storyline with Bray Wyatt, and the way it was booked to help Wyatt aid Hardy was fine.

But it was a missed opportunity to not expose some up-and-coming talent on the WrestleMania pre-show.

Rusev Being Cast in the Background Once Again

2 of 4

Even with the constant feeling of Rusev's momentum being wasted on SmackDown Live for months, there was perhaps still a suspicion it would all change at WrestleMania.

If anyone deserved a true WrestleMania moment, perhaps it was Rusev, who crafted a serious run of momentum from very little after creating his own gimmick in recent months.

But unfortunately, the story was a familiar one for Rusev and his fans at Mania, as he was cast into the background again.

Time will tell whether Jinder Mahal will adjust better to the spotlight as U.S. champ compared to when he held the WWE Championship.

But it's hard not to believe that Rusev would have been a good, and popular, choice here.

Hopefully his time will come over the next few months.

Not Turning Shinsuke Heel Before WrestleMania

3 of 4

The problem with billing AJ Styles vs. Shinsuke Nakamura as a dream match is that, when the bell rings and the action gets underway, it's always going to be pretty difficult for it to live up to that billing.

That proved to be the case at WrestleMania. While the bout was good, it wasn't great, and the events post-match gave a hint as to how the match could have been booked even better.

Turning Nakamura heel was a bold, brave move, and WWE fans will only discover if it has worked in the weeks leading out of WrestleMania.

But could that heel turn have happened several weeks ago, helping to bring the best out of both these two at Mania?

If they have a blockbuster bout at Backlash in a few weeks, with a new side of Nakamura rarely seen during his time on the main roster, it will be hard not to remember that they could have done all that and more on the grandest stage of them all.

Ending Asuka's Streak

4 of 4

It was by far the biggest talking point of WrestleMania 34 in terms of results—but should Asuka's undefeated streak have ended on Sunday night?

Truthfully, only the next few weeks and months will determine whether this was the correct decision by WWE. But right now, it's difficult to imagine it was the right move.

Asuka's streak still felt as though it had plenty of life left in it, with the prospect of her continuing undefeated for at least a few more months just yet.

But if anyone was to end the streak, it probably felt right that it was Charlotte Flair. She's perhaps the best in-ring performer, other than Asuka, in the WWE women's division, so there is that.

But with Asuka no-showing on Raw on Monday night, it suggests her future will be on SmackDown Live. How she bounces back will truly determine whether this was the right decision or not.
