WWE WrestleMania 2018 Results: Ranking Biggest Surprises from Showcase Event

The Doctor Chris MuellerApr 9, 2018

Sunday's WrestleMania 34 pay-per-view was filled with twists, turns, surprises and some of the best action in pro wrestling.

WWE shocked the world with some of the results it booked, and while it's always nice to be surprised, a few of the outcomes likely left some fans upset.

Brock Lesnar retaining the universal title came as a shock to many, as did Charlotte Flair ending Asuka's undefeated streak with a submission victory.

The PPV clocked in at just over five hours, and with a two-hour pre-show, that means fans in attendance and watching at home sat through seven hours of wrestling.

Some of the matches were predictable, but management tried hard to deliver results we weren't expecting. Let's take a look at the biggest surprises at WrestleMania in New Orleans.

John Cena Does the Job

1 of 8

The Undertaker appearing at WrestleMania doesn't count as a surprise because WWE made it obvious he would show up. The way the match played out is what shocked so many people.

John Cena had just taken out Elias when he was walking up the ramp and the lights in the arena went out. The Undertaker's hat and jacket appeared in the ring and disappeared just as quickly.

The Deadman rose from the stage to enter the ring at WrestleMania for the 26th time. He was no longer undefeated, but he was still a larger-than-life presence.

After weeks of Cena hurling insults at The Undertaker and calling him a coward, the two finally met in the middle of the ring.

Taker proceeded to decimate Cena with his trademark brand of offense and defeated the 16-time WWE champion in less than three minutes. If this is his last match at Mania, Taker went out on top.

The Big Dog Comes Up Short

2 of 8

One match everyone was sure would end with a title changing hands was the Universal Championship bout between Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns.

WWE has been building up The Big Dog as the man who could finally put down The Beast since he earned the right to challenge for the title by winning the Elimination Chamber.

Lesnar's yearlong title reign has kept Raw's top championship out of regular rotation, and Reigns was supposed to be the guy who finally brought it back.

The two behemoths went to war in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. At one point, Reigns was busted wide open and began gushing blood onto the mat in a violent scene we have rarely witnessed since WWE went PG.

It took him five F-5s and several suplexes before The Beast put The Big Dog down for the pin. The crowd turned on the main event about halfway through with chants of "Boring" and "This is awful."

Once Lesnar's hand was raised, everyone realized the show was not going to end on a high note, and the atmosphere in the arena completely changed. After a night of fun matches and special moments, 'Mania ended in disappointment.

Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens Are Still Fired

3 of 8

Whenever a Superstar puts his career on the line in a match, the result is usually easy to predict. In the case of Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens vs. Daniel Bryan and Shane McMahon, things were not so cut-and-dried.

Zayn and Owens would be rehired on SmackDown if they won. This may have been Bryan's first match back after two years, but it seemed like he would take a loss so KO and Zayn could return.

This is one of the swerves the crowd actually enjoyed because it ended with Bryan's hand being raised in victory.

Nobody turned on his partner and nobody got his job back. The match ended with the babyfaces winning, which means Zayn and Owens will likely show up on Raw with new contracts from Triple H.

Ronda Rousey Rocks

4 of 8

Ronda Rousey had an uphill battle to fight at WrestleMania, but the MMA legend was more than up to the challenge.

Her debut at the Royal Rumble was met with a lot of criticism. Her appearance overshadowed Asuka's win in the historic first women's Royal Rumble, so she already had a hole to dig herself out of.

A few awkward appearances on Raw didn't inspire confidence in the WWE Universe that she would be able to transition from MMA to pro wrestling with the same level of success.

However, WWE booked her WrestleMania match perfectly. Rowdy Ronda quickly won over the entire crowd and shocked everyone with how good she looked in the ring.

Her armbar is still her greatest weapon, but the punches she unleashed on Triple H got one of the biggest pops of the night. If this is what we can expect from Rousey, she is going to have a long and fruitful career in WWE.

Wyatt Is Woken

5 of 8

Matt Hardy winning the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal was a wonderful moment for the Woken Warrior, but that's not the most interesting part of the match.

As Hardy prepared to fend of Mojo Rawley and Baron Corbin once they were the final three men in the match, Bray Wyatt appeared suddenly in the ring.

He helped the man who threw him into the lake of reincarnation win the match before the two oddballs embraced to show their new allegiance.

The Eater of Worlds has joined the Woken Universe as a follower instead of a leader, and it may be the best thing for his character.

The Wyatt Family fizzled out before its time, but he is getting a second chance with Hardy. The next few weeks will be key to making the storyline work.

The Dream Match Turns into a Nightmare

6 of 8

AJ Styles and Shinsuke Nakamura met for the first time in a WWE ring at WrestleMania with high expectations from the entire WWE Universe.

Their previous encounter in New Japan Pro-Wrestling ended with Nakamura having his hand raised, but The Phenomenal One evened the score by defeating the Royal Rumble winner with his patented Styles Clash.

The two hugged after the match in a show of mutual respect, and then Nakamura stunned the world when he attacked Styles with a vicious low blow.

Styles may have retained his title, but Nakamura made the biggest statement with his heel turn. The charismatic Superstar has run into some roadblocks as a babyface, so this could turn out to be exactly what he needs.

We will have to wait until Tuesday to get a response from the WWE champion, but you can be sure he is going to be looking for retribution.

Nicholas Is Every WWE Fan

7 of 8

Braun Strowman was ordered to find a partner for his Tag Team Championship match against The Bar, but he showed up to WrestleMania without anyone to stand in his corner.

Instead of forfeiting his title shot, The Monster Among Men went out into the crowd and picked a young man named Nicholas to serve as his partner.

Every sports fan has had the fantasy of being picked out of the crowd to join in on the action, but Strowman actually made that dream come true for someone.

Nicholas was tagged into the match for all of two seconds before he tagged back out, but he still ended up leaving WrestleMania as one-half of the new tag team champions.

How WWE proceeds from here will be a topic of discussion on Raw. After all, this kid can't be expected to defend the titles when he has homework.

Even if some found the moment to be cheesy, it helped add some variety and fun to what was otherwise a serious show from top to bottom.

Another Streak Ends in New Orleans

8 of 8

Management booked several matches against the expectations of the WWE Universe, but one bout stands out as having the most surprising outcome.

Asuka's undefeated streak has been talked about since she first arrived on the main roster. She won the first women's Royal Rumble and seemed poised to dethrone Charlotte as the blue brand's champion.

Their match was physical, entertaining and everything you could want from a WrestleMania encounter, but the ending came as a shock to just about everyone.

The Queen locked Asuka in the Figure-Eight and made her tap out to retain the title and officially end Asuka's undefeated streak. Oddly enough, this is the second streak to end at a 'Mania in New Orleans after Brock Lesnar beat The Undertaker at WrestleMania 30.

The two warriors embraced, and Asuka declared Charlotte to be "Ready for Asuka." With Naomi winning the first women's Battle Royal on the pre-show, we may know who the next challenger will be.
