WWE SmackDown Results: Biggest Winners, Losers and Moments from April 24
SmackDown Live looks much different now than it did just a few weeks ago thanks to the Superstar Shake-up. The roster lost multiple stars used weekly, including Bobby Roode, Jinder Mahal and Dolph Ziggler, while gaining potential top talent, such as Asuka, Samoa Joe and Jeff Hardy.
This made the April 24 edition of SmackDown an interesting reset, establishing the new order of the brand ahead of Friday's Greatest Royal Rumble event. The returning Big Cass started off the new-look show by establishing his fresh standing atop the card at the expense of Daniel Bryan.
Another big winner was new SmackDown women's champion Carmella, who dominated her segment while still basking in the glory of her title win. Asuka wasn't as lucky, adding another loss to her record in her first match on SmackDown thanks to dubious tactics by the IIconics.
The final winner was a true surprise, as an unexpected assist from Sunil Singh set up Shelton Benjamin to pin Randy Orton, perhaps setting up The Gold Standard for a future United States Championship match.
From new stars to veterans gaining fresh momentum, the winners and losers on this week's SmackDown began to establish their standing on a reshaped roster.
Winner: Big Cass
1 of 4Last week, Cass made his return to WWE and quickly made a statement by knocking out Bryan. This week, he continued using Bryan as a stepping stone. When The Beard could not come out for his scheduled segment on Miz TV, Cass came out instead to use the time.
In a strong promo, the former tag team star made clear he saw Bryan as a symbol of his former weakness. He refused to let the returning main-event star take a spot away from him. He even shut up The Miz, who didn't even get a chance to ask what happened to Bryan.
It was later confirmed that Cass attacked Bryan backstage and stole The "Yes" Man's spot. The seven-foot giant has repeatedly taken his fate into his own hands and been able to stand out as one of the top stars on SmackDown.
Cass has always been a solid promo with his friend Enzo Amore at his side, but it looks like he's finally found his comfort level without Enzo. He still has to prove he can get it done in the ring, but Bryan is a pretty ideal opponent to help Cass do so.
If this feud does its job, it could help make clear the full scope of SmackDown's new main-event scene. It is a shame that the rivalry is distracting from the potential of Bryan vs. Miz, but it makes sense, with Miz booked for the next month in matches against WWE intercontinental champion Seth Rollins.
Loser: Asuka
2 of 4
Asuka made her SmackDown in-ring debut this week, teaming with Becky Lynch, and miscommunication cost the new team their bout against the more experienced alliance of Billie Kay and Peyton Royce. Royce managed to isolate Lynch and roll her up with her feet on the ropes to steal the win.
The Empress of Tomorrow did not play a large role in the action, getting a short hot tag segment before getting knocked out of the way. However, it was still another blemish on Asuka's nearly spotless record and a poor first showing on a new brand.
It can be tough to establish multiple new acts at the same time, but it is disconcerting that Asuka's first match on SmackDown was also her second loss in a row. The IIconics needed the win, clearly, but this just feels like WWE taking advantage of the end of Asuka's undefeated streak.
The Japanese star's loss at WrestleMania 34 was a dangerous moment in her career. She needs to rebound and prove her streak was not the only thing that defines her. Asuka was arguably treated as the top star on Raw to begin 2018, and now she has a fairly uncertain spot on SmackDown.
Charlotte Flair is the top star with Carmella holding the championship, so Asuka cannot be the main attraction yet. However, this should not be an excuse for The Empress to repeatedly lose as she waits for her chance, because that is the booking that is still holding back her partner Lynch.
Winner: Carmella
3 of 4Carmella clearly decided to carry over last week's 'Mellabration by taking her time during the SmackDown Women's Championship contract signing. Instead of letting Renee Young introduce Charlotte quickly, Carmella stole the mic and cut a great promo on the respect she deserves.
The champ ended the segment getting knocked down by The Queen after Charlotte silently signed the contract, but Carmella still made the lasting impression this week. The Princess of Staten Island was in top form as she ripped into the fans.
This contract signing was perfectly set up to sell the dynamic of this rivalry. Carmella talks a big game while Charlotte plans to let her actions speak for her. Hopefully, Carmella keeps the title for a little while as it has breathed new life into her performance.
The Crown Princess may not be the performer that Charlotte is in the ring, but this is a fresh perspective for the women's division. The Genetically Superior Superstar will always be at the top of the card, but one loss would be the end of Carmella's featured role on the brand.
As long as Carmella steps up her game in the ring just as she has on the mic, she could be a great champion into the summer, with rivals in Asuka and Lynch to keep her occupied for a while.
Winner: Shelton Benjamin
4 of 4
After coming up just short last week against the United States champion, Benjamin used a timely assist from one of the Singh brothers to catch the top contender to the U.S. title with Paydirt and take a huge victory. The Gold Standard slipped right into title contention, while Mahal got a mental edge on Jeff.
Benjamin signed his first contract with WWE eighteen years ago, making him one of the longest working veterans on the roster. In that time, Benjamin has rarely been allowed to stand out near the top of the card. His recent run in WWE has been rocky at best.
This win is the biggest victory the former United States champion has had in years, setting up Shelton as a much bigger singles star than he has been since his return. While he is the third wheel in Orton and Jeff's rivalry, that could be the perfect position to steal away with the gold.
The situation is especially interesting given Benjamin won just one day after Chad Gable pulled off an upset of his own against The Modern Day Maharaja. The former tag partners could both be moving up the card now that they have separated.
It will be exciting to see how the SmackDown midcard division continues to evolve now with new talent especially after Mahal is out of the picture. Will Miz be added to the title scene? Could Andrade Cien Almas debut with a focus on the U.S. title? Anything is possible now.
