WWE SmackDown Results: Biggest Winners, Losers and Moments from April 10
The Mercedes-Benz Superdome has been host to WWE throughout the WrestleMania weekend, with Tuesday being the final night of WWE action. And SmackDown Live had some major statements to make as WWE looked forward into a new season of action.
After her heartbreaking retirement speech on Monday Night Raw, Paige turned a terrible situation into a new opportunity as she won the night with the announcement she would be replacing Daniel Bryan as the new SmackDown general manager.
Paige's first night on the job set up many stars for success, with Peyton Royce and Billie Kay debuting with an attack on Charlotte Flair that set up Carmella to cash in and win the SmackDown Women's Championship. Randy Orton also emerged with a win, earning a future U.S. Championship match.
Unfortunately, The New Day were not among those winners, after they fell to The Usos and lost a chance at the SmackDown Tag Team Championships. AJ Styles wanted a second dream match over this 'Mania week, but Shinsuke Nakamura ruined his bout with Daniel Bryan.
With The Showcase of the Immortals now in the rear-view mirror and the Superstar Shake-up on the horizon, SmackDown talent wanted to make one final impact before they might just be shipped off to Raw.
The winners managed just that, but the losers may end up regretting this night further down the line.
Winner: Paige
1 of 5This week had to be bittersweet for Paige, who finally announced her injury in December would cause her to retire from in-ring action. However, she got back on her feet quickly by taking Bryan's spot as SmackDown GM.
Paige has been in the wrestling business since she was 13, and she was forced to retire at the age of 25. It's a sad story that deserves a happy ending. This new role will keep her in the business she loves and keep her in the spotlight.
The Raven-Haired Renegade will likely have to grow into the new role just as Bryan did before her. For a first time out, SmackDown seemed to benefit from her presence. Outshining Raw as the final show of 'Mania week, this was an impressive event.
Multiple No. 1 contender matches and Bryan vs. Styles defined an epic opening act for the GM. The Land of Opportunity lived up to its nickname while putting the focus back on the in-ring product. Paige's presence may signal a renewed focus on the quality of SmackDown.
With the Superstar Shake-up ahead, Paige will be tested early, and it will be interesting to see how her presence affects the way the blue brand's roster changes.
Losers: The New Day
2 of 5
The top two tag teams on the blue brand battled once more for an opportunity to fight for the SmackDown Tag Team Championships, and The New Day fell to The Usos.
While the former tag team champions were always going to get their rematch, New Day losing here will send them to the back of the line.
Kofi Kingston, Big E and Xavier Woods have largely played second fiddle to Jimmy and Jey Uso on SmackDown since their debut, and now they are going to be even further down the ladder with The Bludgeon Brothers taking over.
Few teams stay together as long as The New Day—approaching four years now—with the group in need of a change to continue to stay atop the division. Perhaps the group will be broken up in the Superstar Shake-up or at least head back to Raw to get away from The Usos.
The two teams have had an incredible rivalry, and their latest match was proof the pairing does not get old. The problem is they have warped the perception of the division. When there are two teams so far ahead of the pack, no one else can stand out.
Raw could use one of the two, with The New Day the better fit right now, while SmackDown is in need of fresh blood sent its way.
The Revival, Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson or The Authors of Pain could all be interesting replacements for the trio.
Winners: Carmella and the Iconic Duo
3 of 5In just one segment, three women who have not had much to celebrate lately made a definitive statement. Royce and Kay made their debut on WWE television, making an example out of champion Charlotte before Carmella ran in to pick up the scraps.
Ms. Money in the Bank is now SmackDown women's champion, taking the title off The Queen just two days after an incredible victory over Asuka. Carmella waited the longest of anyone in history to cash in, but it paid off.
The Iconic Duo have not been used in NXT for a while, so it was only a matter of time before they headed to the main roster. It was important they made such a definitive statement so quickly, though. In one night, Royce and Kay looked more dominant than they ever have in NXT.
It is telling that The Iconic Duo debuted on SmackDown, while the former NXT champion Ember Moon went to Raw, but it could work for both brands. Royce especially has put on strong performances before, and she instantly adds a strong heel presence to the women's division.
Carmella was massively over after winning Money in the Bank, but she has since cooled off due to a lack of use. Hopefully she will get a real chance on top as champion because the reaction from the crowd was proof she can still be a serious star.
Winner: Randy Orton
4 of 5
Defending his rematch clause, Orton had to contend with both Bobby Roode and Rusev to get a shot at Jinder Mahal at Backlash.
The Modern Day Maharaja walked away with The Viper's United States Championship at WrestleMania 34, and Orton now has a chance to exact his revenge.
It was more or less expected that The Apex Predator would lose his title quickly as his championship win was just a resume boost for the future Hall of Famer. It would have been easy to have Orton shuffled out of the title scene after 'Mania.
Instead, for better or worse, Backlash will include one more Orton vs. Mahal match. The two had a mix of solid but terrible clashes during their rivalry in 2017, and the pairing was never that exciting. This isn't a match that will sell fans on Backlash.
Rusev and Roode lost out in this situation, but this may be a sign they will be in the title picture in the future. The Viper pinned The Glorious One to win the match, further developing their rivalry, while Rusev was left out of the finish to potentially set up a more interesting U.S. title feud down the line.
No division needs more of a shake-up right now than SmackDown's midcard title scene. Hopefully, the roster change will give Mahal and Orton some fresh opponents so they are not facing each other throughout 2018.
Loser: AJ Styles
5 of 5Nakamura's change in demeanor has caused Styles serious pain.
After his vicious attack on The Phenomenal One at WrestleMania, The Artist again ruined his night by interfering in his dream match with Daniel Bryan and low blowing Styles once again.
The WWE champion was clear before the main event just how much he had looked forward to stepping into the ring with Bryan for the first time in WWE. The Rock Star let the two men fight long enough that Styles would be frustrated when it was ruined.
This feud got interesting fast with Nakamura's heel turn, and The Artist is already looking far more relaxed and confident in his new role. Their first match was not the instant classic most expected, but it was a solid introduction to what they could do together.
Now in better-defined roles, the second Styles vs. Nakamura clash should have a much greater chance to steal the show.
It was nice to also get a glimpse of Bryan's potential role on SmackDown. He now has a beef with Nakamura as well to set up two instant classics down the line.
Nothing is more scary around this time in WWE than the potential of Styles leaving SmackDown, but Bryan and Nakamura could also leave. It would be a shame, as this trio should be the blue brand's elite going forward.
