Kristaps Porzingis Says Knicks 'Don't Know How to Finish Games' After Hawks Loss
The New York Knicks appeared to have Sunday's game against the Atlanta Hawks in hand with a four-point lead with one minute, seven seconds remaining, but they ultimately lost 99-96.
"I can't even process that we lost," Kristaps Porzingis said, per Ian Begley of ESPN.com. "I can't believe it. It was our game. It was 100 percent our game. Stuff happened quick, and boom, it was over. We're just not there yet as a team. We keep losing these games."
The Knicks have now lost 10 of their last 14 contests.
"We don't know how to finish games. We don't know how to win games at the end," Porzingis said.
New York couldn't finish Sunday's game, as the Hawks ended their victory on a 12-3 run thanks largely to three-pointers from Mike Muscala and Kent Bazemore in the final minute.
It was a disastrous showing for the Knicks, especially playing at home in Madison Square Garden. The Hawks are a mere 16-37 on the season and have one more win than the Orlando Magic's NBA-low 15.
"I would say [it was] the most embarrassing game that we lost, being in the situation where a lot of the situations there was time to score, and we just didn't capitalize on opportunities," Courtney Lee said while reflecting in part on his opponent, per Begley. "... We were in position to win this game, and I think we just checked out and lost focus on a couple of plays, and it cost us."
Despite his frustration with how his team finished, Porzingis did his part with 22 points, eight rebounds, five blocks and four steals.
It was another solid performance from the big man, who made the first All-Star Game of his career this season and was averaging 23.0 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game entering play Sunday.
Even he hasn't prevented the Knicks from a nosedive, though. Begley noted they started 16-13 but are a mere 7-18 in their last 25 games. As a result, they are four games behind the Philadelphia 76ers for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
