Neymar Transfer Reportedly an 'Obsession' for Real Madrid President

Gill ClarkJan 14, 2018

Real Madrid President Florentino Perez is reportedly obsessed with signing Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar.

Perez will therefore attempt to bring the Brazilian to the Santiago Bernabeu after the FIFA 2018 World Cup this summer, according to Cadena SER programme El Larguero (h/t AS).

Neymar is enjoying a superb first season at PSG following his big-money move from Barcelona last summer.

The 25-year-old has scored 11 goals and contributed nine assists in 14 Ligue 1 games to help PSG to the top of the table.

PSG also qualified for the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League by topping Group B and will now face Real Madrid in the last 16.

This is not the first time there has been speculation linking Neymar with Real Madrid, but resident Nasser Al-Khelaifi said at the start of December that it would be "impossible" for Neymar to move to Los Blancos, per AS.

In contrast to PSG, Real Madrid are enduring a difficult season and suffered their fourth La Liga defeat of the season on Saturday at home to Villarreal.

The result leaves the champions 16 points behind leaders Barcelona and the club in crisis, according to ESPN FC's Dermot Corrigan:

The club's position also means that coach Zinedine Zidane is under scrutiny and his job is in doubt, per Simon Johnson at the Evening Standard:

One of Real Madrid's big problems this season has been the poor form of forwards Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema. The Frenchman has managed just two goals in La Liga all season, while Ronaldo only has four.

And beIN Sports correspondent Tancredi Palmeri says that the team's poor form is directly linked to Ronaldo's performances:

Both forwards are now into their 30s, and Madrid look as though they need reinforcements in attack. Replacing Ronaldo, in particular, would be immensely difficult and expensive, but Neymar is one of the few players in the world who has the talent and stature to come in for the Portugal international.

Of course, convincing PSG to sell their star man after just one season will not be easy. However, Neymar has already been part of one shock transfer when he left Barcelona for PSG, and it may be best not to rule anything out when it comes to the flamboyant Brazilian.
