Detroit Pistons: What's Next?
A day after letting head coach Flip Saunders go, the question rises, what is next for these Pistons?
Many people have pointed their Eastern Conference Finals woes at Rasheed Wallace, saying he is inconsistent and needs to stop hurting his team with technicals and outbursts. Some have said that the Pistons are just to old to keep up with the younger, faster teams.
Others have said that it was the coach, Flip Saunders. Well we don't have to worry about that anymore now. So what's next?
FIVE THINGS THE PISTONS NEED TO DO THE IN 2008 OFF-SEASON
1. KEEP WALLACE
In my own opinion, I believe that the Pistons should not trade Rasheed because he is our swagger and the heart of the Piston team. Without Rasheed you lose a versatile big man who also shows his emotions.
Yes, he gets technicals a lot. He gets fined. He is a negative portrayal of a NBA player, but sometimes that is what the Pistons need to get going.
2. MOVE UP IN THE DRAFT
Yes, the Pistons have a great bench and a veteran starting lineup, but they need to move up in the 2008 Draft. I would say trade your 29th pick overall and Theo Ratliff to the New Jersey Nets for their 21st pick overall.
The Nets are in need of a veteran big man and Theo fits that description. Then, in the draft try to take Chris Douglas-Roberts a Small Forward out of Memphis to back up Tayshaun Prince.
3. HIRE AVERY JOHNSON
After the firing of Flip Saunders, the Pistons are in need of a coach. My choice would be Avery Johnson, the former coach of the Dallas Mavericks.
Do not hire assistant coach Michael Curry since he is doing just fine being an assistant. Do not hire NBA Analysts Jeff Van Gundy or Mike Fratello. Both of their last teams can't seem to win more that 30 games a year.
Johnson brings energy on the sidelines. He hasn't been retired from playing for long, so he understands the new ways of the game.
4. TRADE RIP
The Pistons need a slasher type of player. Detroit has plenty of shooters, so they can let go of one of them. Possibly trade for Phoenix's Leandro Barbosa and Raja Bell. Another option would be to send Rip to Portland for Brandon Roy straight up, but that may be a long shot.
5. MAXIMIZE BENCH P.T.
The Zoo Crew, as they were known as in Detroit, needs to get maximum playing time in the 2008-2009 season. Last year, after the Pistons clinched a playoff spot players like Rodney Stuckey, Jason Maxiell and others got plenty of playing time.
Since the starting lineup is, sorry to say, somewhat old, the young players need to get time in clutch situations to help the future of the team.
Lose in NBA Championship Round to Phoenix or New Orleans
