"Super" Trail Blazers Player Preview, Part 2

Busta BucketOct 15, 2009
Took long enough right? We finally had some time to finish up our Blazers player preview. If you've already forgotten, part one was done on Sunday night and can be found here . You'll find the remaining Blazer players below. Enjoy.

With x-ray vision and the ability to fly, our new assist man should make everybody around him better.

Andre Miller was brought here to Portland for his experience, his ability to see the floor, and make tough passes. Not for a very long time have we had a guy, who can truly run the break and see everything happening before it happens. At his age he may have lost a step, but the craftiness and experience just continue to improve.

Many Blazers fans aren't fully aware of the abilities of Andre Miller, but they soon will learn. Nothing is more fun than having a smart point guard who knows his personnel. It will take a little time, but as this season goes on, Andre is going to find a nice niche where he can constantly use Greg Oden and LaMarcus Aldridge for alley-oop dunks. Andre won't have jaw dropping season averages, but his impact as a veteran and a distributor will no doubt be felt by our front court.
Controlling and suppressing this young heroes talent will be difficult considering his potential.
Dante Cunningham won't see much time this season, but his potential is very intriguing. After a stellar showing in the NBA summer league, Cunningham has shown an ability to hit jumpers, play defense, and move without the ball. He's also incredibly athletic which is a key part of succeeding as an NBA player. Look for Dante in a few blow-outs this year, he'll be the one knocking down 15-foot jumpers and working extra hard to get boards and make plays.
A hero for all Americans. He's strong, patriotic and committed with nothing other than his God-given abilities.
Joel Przybilla endured quite a few years of hard times in the NBA. Coming out of one of the worst drafts in recent NBA history, Joel was destined for better things. Early on as a Blazer he endured the pains of Zach Randolph, but now finally has a healthy, well rounded team to compliment his abilities. Joel is a work horse. He doesn't need to score points. His goal in nearly every game is to make his opponent mad, get rebounds, and play defense. He's one of the hardest workers on the team and his toughness frustrates teams all around the league. Joel will now take a bit of a backseat to Greg Oden, but I still see him having just as much of an effect. His influence on Greg and symbiotic relationship with LaMarcus will work just as well as ever for the team. Joel is the old veteran on this team of avengers.
Lanky, athletic and stoic he's able to stretch and stop anyone on defense.
Oh what a difference a year makes. Last year during preseason, the only thing Blazer fans knew about Nicolas was that he was young and seemed not at all NBA ready thanks to the 2008 summer league. But Batum managed to work his way into the starting line-up as a role player, all the while gaining confidence.
After a nice outing this summer for the French national team, Batum will look to have a slightly bigger impact for the Blazers. His confidence and abilities have soared and if he is ready, he can become the Blazers very own Tayshaun Prince. I don't see a lot of offensive production right now for this French product, but the intangibles, and the defense are what will keep him on this team for a long time.
Resiliency and toughness throughout his career keep him confident in this league.
Ime Udoka has done some seriously hard time playing basketball overseas. From fights to everything else, he's truly earned his spot in the NBA. Three years ago he got his first real opportunity with his hometown team, the Trail Blazers. He was an instant fan favorite.
But after leaving for more money in San Antonio, he's back to try to make the last roster spot on a remodeled Blazer roster. His impact on the team, should he make it, will be in practice and on the bench. Ime made some money and I think he's content to help out in any way possible.
Truly a daredevil on the court, he plays with blind ambition as a man without fear.
Travis Outlaw is the lone draftee of the old Blazer regime. His impact on the Blazers has always been one of a good friend and a total wild card on the court. After seeing his offseason workout video , I knew things were going to be different this year.
So far Travis has looked out of sync, out of touch, and I don't see it changing much in the regular season. To be perfectly honest he doesn't fit in on this team anymore. A guy who can jump out the gym, but refuses to get rebounds is tough to sell at the power forward position. His defense doesn't really allow him to play the small forward. So what do we do with our daredevil? It remains to be seen. But if he does get playing time, it will be the usual hit or miss, frustrate and excite, all at the same time.
The most powerful hero is looking to be the savior of our metropolis.
Brandon Roy has been nothing short of spectacular in his first three NBA seasons. From rookie of the year to All-Star games, Roy has been a consistent over achiever. But now, the hype has caught up to him and he is expected to be the focal point and carry the load on and off the court. He's increased his points per game each year in the league, but this year I see a potential dip in ppg.
With so many talented players around him, Roy will need to spread the love and do other things like play improved defense. I see no reason why Brandon can't exceed our expectations once again. Perhaps he starts to become a defensive stopper, or maybe his assists and rebound numbers go up. Either way, he now has his stacked team, it's just a matter of taking it to the next level. Expect another great year; 22 ppg, six rpg, six apg and a rounded out solid game.
That is it for our individual previews. Hopefully you enjoyed the pictures. We will be doing a general Blazers preview this weekend so look for that sometime on Monday.
