The 46-year-old longtime wrestling star made a surprise return to Smackdown Live, WWE's Tuesday night show, this past week after leaving in early May to work with Fozzy. He restarted a feud with former storyline buddy Kevin Owens, losing a triple-threat match also involving eventual winner A.J. Styles.
It's continued a recent trend of Jericho leaving for an unknown period of time before popping back up out of nowhere to shock the audience, an increasingly tough challenge in today's media environment, where returns and departures are often reported weeks in advance.
Last November, he toldĀ Tim FiorvantiĀ of ESPN.com he isn't always sure what the future holds when it comes to WWE, but he's all-in whenever he does return from his music career.
"When I come back, I come back full time," Jericho said. "I come back to be as involved as I can be. I still enjoy working the Detroits, the New Yorks, the Chicagos and Las Vegases; those type of shows because it's fun. That's why I do this, because I still enjoy it and I have a lot of fun with it. If I didn't, I wouldn't be doing it."
In 2014, he talked about the common bond between wrestling fans and rock fans, which both take on an important role in making a show work, perĀ Jim VarsalloneĀ of theĀ Miami Herald.
"There's a lot of similarities between the two," Jericho said. "They're both very high energy, aggressive forms of entertainment, very dependent on the reactions you get from the crowd. If the crowd is excited, it makes for a better show -- both in wrestling and with Fozzy. So you get a lot of crossover because there is that certain vibe in both. Certainly WWE superstars are like rock starsālarger than life, over the top personalitiesāand thatās what youāre always looking for in rock-n-roll."
