Sonny Gray Reportedly a Trade Target for Washington Nationals
The Washington Nationals have reportedly circled Oakland Athletics pitcher Sonny Gray as a trade target with less than a week remaining until the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.
According to Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal, the Nationals are "in" on Gray, but their ability to complete a deal may hinge on their willingness to part with fifth-ranked prospect Victor Robles.
MLB Network's Jon Morosi first reported the A's had "shown interest" in Robles.
Gray has also been linked heavily to the New York Yankees, who are seeking to stabilize a starting rotation that's been hampered by inconsistency and a season-ending injury to Michael Pineda.
On Tuesday, Morosi reported the A's are "prioritizing young center fielders" in trade talks, including Yankees prospect Estevan Florial.
Robles fits that description, as well, and would represent a major score for the A's if the Nationals do ramp up their pursuit of Gray.
In 77 Carolina League appearances this season prior to his promotion to Double-A Harrisburg, the 20-year-old slashed .289/.377/.495 with seven home runs, 33 RBI and 16 stolen bases.
Morosi added the Seattle Mariners "have show interest" in Gray, although it's unclear what they would be willing to part with in a potential deal.
Gray, 27, is arbitration eligible through 2019 and is currently scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in 2020.
