David Phelps Traded to Mariners from Marlins for Brayan Hernandez, More
The Seattle Mariners acquired relief pitcher David Phelps in a trade with the Miami Marlins on Thursday.
The Marlins announced the deal, noting they received four prospects including outfielder Brayan Hernandez. Hernandez was the M's sixth-rated minor league player before the trade, per MLB.com. Jim Bowden of SiriusXM Radio first confirmed the sides reached a final agreement.
Phelps spent the first four years of his MLB career as a swing man, working as both a reliever and an occasional starter with the Marlins and New York Yankees. He struggled as part of the Miami rotation in 2015, posting a 4.50 ERA, and has worked almost exclusively out of the bullpen ever since.

Yankees Call Up 6'7" Prospect 📈
The 30-year-old Notre Dame product put together the best campaign of his career last year. He finished with a 2.28 ERA and 1.14 WHIP with 114 strikeouts in 86.2 innings across 64 appearances.
Although he hasn't been able to match those numbers so far this year, he's still enjoying a solid season to the tune of a 3.45 ERA and more than a strikeout per inning (51 K in 47 IP).
In March, Phelps noted he was prepared to embrace a full-time bullpen role rather than trying to establish himself as a starter, per Craig Davis of the Sun Sentinel.
"I'm not really worried about that anymore," he said. "More concerned about what I can accomplish as a pitcher. Don't really care about the role. It's at a point now that all that really matters is winning and trying to get this ballclub to the playoffs and win a championship."
Phelps will likely assume a set-up role alongside Nick Vincent in the Mariners bullpen to provide the bridge between the starters and closer Edwin Diaz.
