Shinsuke Nakamura Beats Baron Corbin via DQ at WWE Battleground 2017

Mike ChiariJul 23, 2017

Shinsuke Nakamura continued his ascent on the SmackDown Live roster Sunday at Battleground with a disqualification victory over Mr. Money in the Bank Baron Corbin.

Growing frustrated with his inability to keep Nakamura down for the three-count, Corbin resorted to a low blow, which forced the referee to call for the bell.

WWE showed that Nakamura was unable to celebrate his victory:

Both the Miami Herald's Scott Fishman and Figure Four Online's Bryan Alvarez felt let down by the match:

Nakamura has been a target since making his way from NXT to the main roster after WrestleMania, and he found himself firmly in Corbin's crosshairs at the Money in the Bank pay-per-view.

During The King of Strong Style's entrance, the Lone Wolf jumped him, which resulted in Nakamura getting helped to the back.

Although the Japanese Superstar did manage to return later in the match, Corbin pushed both him and AJ Styles off a ladder en route to securing the briefcase.

Corbin wasn't done with Nakamura yet, however, as he continued to make an example of the former NXT champion on SmackDown.

Corbin attacked Nakamura backstage during an interview a few weeks ago, which led to a match between them the following week.

That match never occurred, though, as Nakamura went after Corbin during his entrance, resulting in WWE personnel breaking up the brawl.

With so much bad blood between them, SmackDown Live commissioner Shane McMahon booked Nakamura and Corbin against each other in a grudge match at Battleground to settle the score.

The bout featured an intriguing dynamic since Nakamura is highly experienced, considered one of the best overall performers in the world and beloved by the fans.

Corbin is still fairly new to the game, but he is among SmackDown's top heels by proxy, as the brand is lacking in terms of established Superstars on that side of the ledger.

Sunday's match was a great opportunity for Corbin with regard to seeing if he would be able to hang with one of the top guys WWE has to offer.

While Corbin came out on the losing end, the fact that he has the Money in the Bank contract means he should be able to rebound fairly easily.
