Arsenal Transfer News: Latest Rumours on Virgil van Dijk and Olivier Giroud
Arsenal are interested in signing Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk ahead of the start of the new season.
According to Rob Draper of the Mail on Sunday (h/t Rhys Turrell of the Daily Star), Gunners boss Arsene Wenger could turn his attentions to the Dutchman who has attracted interest throughout the summer. Liverpool had chased the centre-back, but the Saints refused to do business with the Anfield club after their aggressive pursuit.
Van Dijk is certainly ready for the step up to a more prestigious team, and Arsenal fit the bracket of a side that would greatly benefit from his abilities. Wenger's starting XI was often exposed at centre-back last season, and a full revamp of the defence would be appreciated by supporters after the capture of striker Alexandre Lacazette.

Van Dijk has emerged as one of England's most consistent defensive talents, leading Southampton into European competition last season.
The Netherlands international featured in 21 Premier League games and six matches in the UEFA Europa League, according to WhoScored.com.
Losing the player would be a huge blow to the Saints, and they will be keen to retain the centre-back into next season.

In other Gunners news, Everton are willing to match Wenger's valuation of Olivier Giroud as they search for a replacement for Romelu Lukaku.
According to Yahoo Sport UK, the French striker could move to Merseyside to pair up with the returning Wayne Rooney from Manchester United. The 30-year-old has fought to be part of the starting XI at the Emirates Stadium but has often been left on the bench.
Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol said he believes a deal could be reached:
Giroud has been a loyal servant to Arsenal during his years with the team, and he has been a regular provider of goals in tricky situations late in Premier League matches.
However, he has not provided the overall quality at No. 9 needed to win a major championship, with the FA Cup offering little relief to Arsenal fans.
The signing of Lacazette will scare opposition defences next season, and his mobility through the centre will benefit the Gunners' creative talents.
Arsenal finally have a top-class striker who will deliver goals on a weekly basis in all competitions.
