Manchester United Transfer News: Romelu Lukaku, Antoine Griezmann Rumours

Matt JonesJul 7, 2017

Chelsea have reportedly matched Manchester United's offer for Everton striker Romelu Lukaku in a last-ditch attempt to sign the Belgium international.

According to Matt Law of the Daily Telegraph, while the striker is close to a £75 million move to Old Trafford, the Blues are ready to give their former player a decision to make.

"Chelsea made an offer that would guarantee Everton and Lukaku the same amount of money as they would receive from United but were not prepared to match the agent fees Mino Raiola would pocket from the Old Trafford club," Law reported.

However, Lukaku looks destined for Old Trafford, with United announcing via Twitter on Saturday a fee had been agreed with Everton for the player.

Law suggested that Raiola has played a big role in his client's potential move to Old Trafford:

The proposed transfer has captured the imagination of football fans, as it appeared Lukaku was destined for a return to Stamford Bridge.

The striker has excelled during his four years at Everton, initially joining on loan from Chelsea for the 2013-14 campaign. But with the Toffees not playing in next season's UEFA Champions League, the striker is ready to take the next step in his career, having netted 25 Premier League goals last season.

As noted by James Robson of the Manchester Evening News, the transfer will reunite United manager Jose Mourinho and a player he previously cashed in on:

Although Chelsea are said to have made a late move for the striker, it seems likely United have got their man.

Lukaku is still raw in a lot of areas of his game, most notably in terms of his work with his back to goal. However, if the Red Devils can create space for him, he has the physicality and poaching instincts needed to score a lot of goals for his prospective new club.

United to Chase Griezmann Next Summer

According to Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News, United's potential capture of Lukaku will not stop the club moving for Atletico Madrid man Antoine Griezmann next summer.

Luckhurst noted Griezmann was a target for the Red Devils earlier in the window but that he opted to stay at Atletico because of their transfer ban. Still, it doesn't seem as if United are ready to completely give up on signing the Frenchman yet.

"Griezmann's release clause remains €100 million (£88 million), and United would not be expected to have any qualms about triggering it," Luckhurst reported.

Under the guidance of Diego Simeone at Atletico Madrid, Griezmann has gone from strength to strength. Formerly a flamboyant winger at Real Sociedad, he's blossomed into a fantastic, thoroughbred forward with Los Colchoneros.

Per Squawka Football, since arriving at the capital club in 2014, he's been dangerous in the final third of the pitch:

According to Luckhurst, United isolated Griezmann and Lukaku as their top attacking targets in January because of the uncertainty over Zlatan Ibrahimovic's future.

While it's unlikely the Red Devils will field the duo during the coming campaign, the prospect of the pair linking up in 2018-19 is ominous for the rest of the Premier League.
