Sergey Kovalev's Promoters to File Protest over Loss to Andre Ward

Adam WellsJun 17, 2017

After Andre Ward defeated Sergey Kovalev via TKO in the eighth round on Saturday night, the post-fight press conference turned into a sea of chaos involving fans and Main Events CEO Kathy Duva.

Per Yahoo Sports' Chris Mannix, Main Events intends to file a protest regarding the result, claiming Ward hit Kovalev with repeated low blows.

Mannix added there were a number of Ward supporters in the press area "hollering" at Duva after she made it known Main Events planned to file the protest on behalf of Kovalev.

ESPN's Arash Markazi provided video of the scene from the post-fight press conference:

Ward was awarded the TKO after delivering a flurry of punches that left Kovalev wobbly, including multiple body shots. Kovalev was doubled over in pain following two hard lefts to the lower body when the referee stopped things.

It wasn't 100 percent clear if Ward actually hit Kovalev below the belt with any of his punches. They were certainly close, and Duva believes there is enough evidence to warrant a protest.

The win marks the second time Ward has defeated Kovalev since November. He was awarded a unanimous decision in their first matchup and ran his record to 32-0 with Saturday's win.
