Red Sox Analyst Jerry Remy Thinks Translators Visiting Mound Should Be Illegal
Boston Red Sox analyst Jerry Remy turned heads Tuesday when he said it should be illegal for translators to attend mound visits.
"Learn baseball language," he said during Tuesday's contest between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox, via Chris Chavez of Sports Illustrated. "It's pretty simple. You break it down pretty easy between pitching coach and pitcher after a long period of time."
Remy made the comments when Yankees pitching coach Larry Rothschild was accompanied by Shingo Horie, Masahiro Tanaka's translator, during a fourth-inning mound visit.

The controversial take came on the same day Philadelphia Phillies legend Mike Schmidt appeared on 94WIP SportsRadio in Philadelphia and said the Phillies couldn't build around center fielder Odubel Herrera because of a language barrier (via CBS Philly).
Schmidt later issued a statement, saying "I'm very sorry that this misrepresentation of my answer occurred and may have offended someone" (via John Clark of CSN Philly). But his suggestion that Herrera "can't be a guy that would sort of sit in a circle with four, five American players and talk about the game" was similar in tone to Remy's comments.
As for Tuesday's game, the Red Sox chased Tanaka after five innings and five earned runs.
