Manchester United Transfer News: Latest Rumours on Harry Kane and Alvaro Morata

Matt JonesJun 24, 2017

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho would reportedly prefer for the club to focus on signing Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane instead of club legend Cristiano Ronaldo this summer.

According to David McDonnell of the Sunday Mirror, the Portuguese coach is keen to bring Kane to Old Trafford in a deal that would be worth around £100 million.

Per McDonnell, Real Madrid man Ronaldo has been linked with a summer transfer, with United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward said to be exploring the prospect of bringing the forward back to Manchester. However, it appears Mourinho would prefer to see the money spent on Kane instead.

"Tottenham insist they will not listen to any bids for their star player, but a mind-blowing offer of Ronaldo proportions—in the region of £100 million—would certainly give chairman Daniel Levy food for thought," McDonnell wrote. "Mourinho is a huge fan of Kane's and believes United should pay whatever it takes to land him."

Kane has enjoyed a remarkable rise in the Premier League over the past three seasons and has been one of the most prolific players in the top flight, per Squawka Football:

He's still improving too. The 23-year-old was sensational last term, coming into his own in 2017 and, despite a spell on the sidelines with injury, finishing the campaign as the division's top scorer.

Although he has yet to reach Ronaldo's standards, Kane would offer United more in terms of longevity as a signing. The man himself has high hopes for the future too:

United have always had a reputation for signing the most exciting British players, and in the past, it would be easy to believe Kane would be tempted by a move to Old Trafford. As things stand, it's a little different.

Tottenham are on an exciting upward trajectory, and under manager Mauricio Pochettino, Kane has made substantial improvements to his game. With that in mind, it's tough to think of many clubs more suited to the striker than the north London outfit.

Alvaro Morata Rumours

According to Neil Fissler of the Sunday Express, Manchester United will press on with more negotiations with Real Madrid as they seek to accelerate a transfer for Alvaro Morata.

Fissler suggested the Red Devils have already seen a £60 million offered turned away for the forward, with Madrid said to rate Morata as a £70 million footballer. As a result, the deal is said to be some way off being done.

"But the two clubs are set to have talks early this week in a bid to reach an agreement before the United players return for pre-season training," Fissler said.

With Zlatan Ibrahimovic having departed Old Trafford, Mourinho's squad does look to be short of numbers at centre-forward. Morata's work rate, intelligent movement and physicality would make him an ideal stylistic fit for the Portuguese.

The Spain international found a prolific edge last season too. As noted by OptaJose, when he was on the field, the striker typically made a contribution:

The presence of players such as Ronaldo and Karim Benzema meant his starts were limited, though. And even though Morata would regularly rattle in the goals, manager Zinedine Zidane rarely called upon the ex-Juventus man in the biggest fixtures.

United would be able to give him the starting role he surely craves at this point in his career. And while the fee may seem excessive, it's easy to see Morata flourishing after a sustained spell working under Mourinho.
