Pavin Smith Selected No. 7 by Diamondbacks in 2017 MLB Draft
The Arizona Diamondbacks used the No. 7 pick of the 2017 MLB draft to select first baseman Pavin Smith.
The left-hander from Virginia is considered one of the best pure hitters in the class after improving each year of his college career.

After being drafted in the 32nd round in 2014 and electing to go to college, he was named a Freshman All-American with a .307 average and seven home runs. His batting average jumped to .329 as a sophomore and .342 as a junior. His strength remained on display as well with power to all fields as a true middle-of-the-order threat.
Meanwhile, Smith has shown an impressive approach at the plate for a young hitter, keeping strikeouts to a minimum while getting on base at a high clip.
"He has that hit and power combination as a first baseman," a scouting director told Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com. "He has a proven track record as a hitter with plate discipline and power. That profiles well at first base."
Here's what the internet had to say about Smith joining the Diamondbacks:
Add his solid size at 6'2", 210 pounds, and he has everything you look for in a big-time hitter.
Smith has a strong arm, but without good speed he is unlikely to play anywhere besides first base in the pros. Still, his ability at the plate makes him worthy of such a high draft pick.
The Diamondbacks are having an outstanding year at the MLB level, but their farm system is still in need of repair after former general manager Dave Stewart made some poor trades, such as dealing shortstop Dansby Swanson and pitcher Aaron Blair in the same trade for Shelby Miller.
Smith is a polished college hitter who can move through the system quickly and join a talented group of position players in Arizona in the not-too-distant future.
