NCAA Wrestling Championships 2017: Results, Team Standings After Saturday
For the second year in a row and seventh time in the past eight years, the Penn State Nittany Lions placed first at the NCAA Wrestling Championships on Saturday in St. Louis.
All five of PSU's finalists were victorious Saturday, which allowed the team to hold off Ohio State and continue its recent run of dominance.
| 1 | Penn State | 146.5 |
| 2 | Ohio State | 110 |
| 3 | Oklahoma State | 103 |
| 4 | Iowa | 97 |
Each of the final five matches of the night featured a Penn State wrestler, and all of them managed to prevail.
According to TheOpenMat.com, that feat had only been accomplished three other times in NCAA wrestling history:
Here is a full rundown of the results from all 10 finals that were contested Saturday:
| 197 | Brett Pfarr (Minnesota) vs. J'Den Cox (Missouri) | 8-2, Cox |
| 285 | Kyle Snyder (Ohio State) vs. Connor Medbery (Wisconsin) | 6-3, Snyder |
| 125 | Darian Cruz (Lehigh) vs. Ethan Lizak (Minnesota) | 6-3, Cruz |
| 133 | Cory Clark (Iowa) vs. Seth Gross (South Dakota State) | 4-3, Clark |
| 141 | Dean Heil (Oklahoma State) vs. George DiCamillo (Virginia) | 6-3, Heil |
| 149 | Zain Retherford (Penn State) vs. Lavion Mayes (Missouri) | 18-2, Retherford |

| 174 | Mark Hall (Penn State) vs. Bo Jordan (Ohio State) | 5-2, Hall |
| 184 | Bo Nickal (Penn State) vs. Gabe Dean (Cornell) | 4-3, Nickal |
Penn State's string of five wins began with Zain Retherford at 149 pounds, and he demolished Mizzou's Lavion Mayes 18-2 in the most one-sided match of the night.
Per ESPN Stats & Info, no wrestler in the nation boasts a longer active winning streak than Retherford:
The next bout was another Penn State versus Missouri final, and the result was the same, with PSU's Jason Nolf defeating Joey Lavallee 14-6 at 157 pounds.
According to NCAA Wrestling, the No. 1 seed did exactly what he set out to do by winning in decisive fashion:
Arguably the most shocking moment of the night came in the 165-pound final between Penn State's Vincenzo Joseph and top-seeded Isaiah Martinez of Illinois.
Martinez entered the match with a career record of 98-1 and two national titles to his credit, but that didn't deter Joseph, as he scored a pin to pull off the massive upset:

Penn State then closed out its perfect night with two more upsets. True freshman Mark Hall knocked off Ohio State's Bo Jordan at 174 pounds, and Bo Nickal held off top-seeded Gabe Dean of Cornell in the marquee match at 184 pounds to complete the sweep.
While Saturday was primarily about Penn State's incredible performance, a pair of standouts from other schools added to their already stacked resumes as well.
At 197 pounds, Missouri's J'den Cox beat Brett Pfarr of Minnesota to win his third career NCAA championship.
He also closed out his career with a lengthy unbeaten streak:
Additionally, 2016 Olympic gold medalist Kyle Snyder won his second consecutive NCAA title at 285 pounds.
As seen in the following GIF, Snyder rag-dolled Wisconsin's Connor Medbery and imposed his will throughout the match:
Multiple schools are stacked with top-tier wrestling talent, and that was on full display Saturday despite Penn State's undefeated night.
Dethroning the Nittany Lions moving forward may be an exercise in futility, however, as all five of Penn State's national title winners will return in 2018.
