WWE SmackDown: Potential Spoilers, News and Preview for March 14

Ryan DilbertMar 14, 2017

The pursuit of revenge will permeate the bones of Tuesday's WWE SmackDown.

Last week's show left many a Superstar seething with anger. Dean Ambrose suffered an attack that left him pinned to the arena floor, Shane McMahon got into a shouting match with one of his employees and a post-match assault on John Cena is sure to have the powerhouse enraged.

All that overflowing anger will aid the blue brand in its build toward WrestleMania 33.

The April 2 pay-per-view is fast approaching. Every Tuesday until then will be WWE's chance to sell its audience on the event's matches, and there will be no shortage of bad blood in SmackDown's stories along the way.

What's in store for the show Pittsburgh is set to host?

Backstage news, the SmackDown preview on WWE.com and projecting where narratives are headed provide an early look. The show will then air on Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET on USA Network.

News, Potential Spoilers

The Wyatt Family may be about to recover somewhat after seeing both Luke Harper and Randy Orton exit the group. Erick Rowan is poised to return after recovering from a shoulder injury.

"Rowan is slated to be at this week's WWE TV tapings," Mike Johnson reported for PWInsider.com.

The big man hasn't wrestled since last September. If he comes back now, he would add an intriguing element in the feud between Orton and WWE champion Bray Wyatt.

Tuesday's SmackDown won't feature Jack Swagger.

The little-used Superstar is now a free agent. WWE announced on Monday that it had released the former world champion.

The NXT women's champ has a better shot of showing up at SmackDown. As Randall Ortman of Cageside Seats noted, WWE teased the possibility of Asuka challenging SmackDown women's champ Alexa Bliss before rewording the post.

Fans will now be on the lookout for hints of Asuka's arrival whether that was meant to be foreshadowing or not.

SmackDown Streaks

Carmella finally hit a stumbling block.

After a run of wins, she teamed up with James Ellsworth against Cena and Nikki Bella last Tuesday in a losing effort. Per CageMatch.net, this was Carmella's first defeat since Dec. 12.

Her record in singles competition, though, remains impressive. The Princess of Staten Island is still undefeated on SmackDown in 2017 with a 3-0 mark.

She won't be hurting for momentum when she and the rest of the women's division takes on Bliss for the women's title at WrestleMania.

Momentum for Simon Gotch and Aiden English, on the other hand, has to feel like an alien concept at this point. As seen on CageMatch.net, The Vaudevillains haven't competed on SmackDown since Feb. 7. They have since missed four consecutive shows and have only two TV or PPV matches on their record this year.

WWE seems to have completely given up on the former NXT tag team titleholders, not showcasing them in the least.

Animosity Ahead of WrestleMania

Cena and Bella were victorious together last week but had little time to celebrate. After the power couple knocked off Carmella and Ellsworth, The Miz and Maryse ambushed them.

The SmackDown preview on WWE.com asked, "Will Cena and Nikki seek retribution?"

That seems like a certainty. A mixed-tag team match is expected between those four Superstars at WrestleMania, and a hunt for vengeance would do well to build toward that.

Ambrose will have retribution on his mind, as well.

The intercontinental champion fell victim to a sneak attack from Baron Corbin last Tuesday. Corbin smashed with him a pipe before crushing him with a forklift.

That spells an angry Ambrose looking to strike back. The SmackDown preview asked, "Will Ambrose be well enough (certainly not mentally) to seek payback on The Lone Wolf?"

It's clear Ambrose and Corbin are headed for a clash for the IC title at WrestleMania. Bliss is booked to face every available woman on the roster for her belt. But what of American Alpha?

Tuesday's show will need to clear up the SmackDown Tag Team Championship picture.

The Usos have issues with the champs, but there hasn't been a sustained rivalry between them. The Ascension, Breezango and others haven't been on TV much. There's not a ton of time before WrestleMania arrives, so SmackDown is going to have to lay out its tag team title plans in a hurry.

What WWE has in mind for AJ Styles is obvious. He and McMahon are on a clear collision course.

After losing to Orton last week and being pushed aside as No. 1 contender to the WWE title, Styles confronted the commissioner backstage.

McMahon is sure to respond to the altercation, perhaps even punishing The Phenomenal One. Sparks will fly at that point, kickstarting the rivalry between these two.

While a number of fans aren't thrilled about the idea of Styles facing McMahon at WrestleMania, their first interaction hinted at ample electricity to follow.
