Alex Stump to Transfer from Ohio State, No Longer with Football Team

Tim DanielsMar 7, 2017

An Ohio State spokesperson confirmed Tuesday wide receiver Alex Stump is no longer a member of the Buckeyes football team.

Dave Biddle of 247Sports' Bucknuts passed along the news (via the outlet's Alex Gleitman). Gleitman noted it's unclear where the offensive playmaker is planning to continue his football career, but Bucknuts reportedly heard rumors of interest from Vanderbilt.

Stump was a 4-star prospect and the No. 184 overall recruit in the 2015 class, according to the Scout. He was also the No. 24 wide receiver and the best player at the position from Ohio that year.

The former St. Edward High School standout failed to make an impact with the Buckeyes, though.

He sat out the 2015 season as a redshirt. He returned to the active roster for the 2016 campaign, but he made just one catch for eight yards.

The Silver Bullet‏ commented on the departure as Ohio State works to get down to the 85-player scholarship limit:

OSU stands at 86 scholarships after the recent exits, according to the 247Sports report.

Allen Trieu of Scout provided the following report on the wideout after he switched his commitment from Kentucky to the Buckeyes in 2015:

"

Nice sized kid with the frame to continue to add bulk. Good ball tracking skills, catch radius and uses his body well to get in position to make grabs and shield defenders. Can go up and make catches away from his body. Used on screens and short routes and shows solid open field ability. Good but not great speed and does not always create a lot of separation. Shows toughness and willingness to go over the middle and to get involved as a blocker.

"

Vanderbilt's top three receivers from the 2016 season—C.J. Duncan, Trent Sherfield and Caleb Scott—are set to become seniors in 2017. So joining the Commodores would give Stump one year to acclimate to the scheme before potentially taking on an important role in 2018.
