Giants Coach Jose Alguacil Required Surgery After Being Hit in Face by Foul Ball

Mike ChiariMar 4, 2017

San Francisco Giants first base coach Jose Alguacil required surgery after getting hit in the face by a foul ball Saturday during an exhibition game against the Kansas City Royals in Surprise, Arizona.

According to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle, Alguacil suffered a broken nose, deep lacerations and fractures in his eye socket.

Per Andrew Baggarly of the Mercury News, the incident occurred on a check-swing foul ball off the bat of Royals third baseman Hunter Dozier.

Alguacil was bleeding while being tended to by trainers and was airlifted to St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy commented on the incident following the game, according to Baggarly: "It's what we do here," he said, regarding Alguacil's being positioned on a folding chair against the backstop and behind his team's on-deck circle. "Unfortunately, I think most of us have been hit. It was unfortunate this was near the eye area. ... It's so dangerous there. It was so quick. I barely saw it."

The 44-year-old Alguacil is in the midst of his first season as part of the Giants staff. He was a manager at the Double-A level in 2015 and managed Triple-A Sacramento last season.

Alguacil was a minor league player in both the Giants and Chicago White Sox systems before transitioning to coaching.
