Orioles Place Zach Britton on DL with Forearm Injury

Alec NathanApr 16, 2017

Baltimore Orioles closer Zach Britton was placed on the disabled list Sunday with a forearm injury.

Steve Melewski of MASNSports.com reported the news. It's unclear if Britton will be able to return within the next 10 days.

Britton has ranked among MLB's premier closers for the past few seasons, and 2016 represented an unequivocal high point for the 29-year-old.

In his sixth professional season, Britton saved an American League-best 47 games while posting a 0.54 ERA and 0.84 WHIP with 74 strikeouts and 18 walks over 67 innings.

"This guy had maybe the best year in the history of relief pitching," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said in November, per MASNSports.com's Roch Kubatko.

Through six appearances this season, Britton has registered five saves behind a 1.29 ERA and 1.86 WHIP.

Should Britton miss extended action, Showalter could pivot to setup man Darren O'Day as the team's interim closer.
