Why Walker Knew He'd Leave Seahawks
In November, the Dolphins placed Jordan Cameron on injured reserve as a result of concussion problems. DolphinsWire's Luis D. Sung wrote at the time that it wasn't clear whether Cameron will continue playing altogether, having suffered multiple concussions over his NFL career.
With that question hovering over the Dolphins offense in 2017, re-signing Gray makes sense. He has been a steady backup behind Dion Sims, especially after Cameron's concussion forced him to play a bigger role.
The Palm Beach Post's Joe Schad praised Gray's work:
Sims will be a free agent at the end of the season, which adds to the doubt around the tight end position in Miami.
Should the Dolphins feel confident about Cameron returning, they could let Sims walk and still be set at the position with Gray signed through the next two years. If they lose both Cameron and Sims, then Gray at least will provide some continuity at tight end next season.
