Barcelona Transfer News: Latest Rumours on Philippe Coutinho and Joao Cancelo

Rory MarsdenDec 18, 2016

Barcelona target Joao Cancelo will reportedly not move to the Camp Nou in January as he is currently committed to Valencia, according to Los Che sporting director Suso Pitarch.

The Blaugrana have been heavily linked with right-back Cancelo recently, and it was reported that Valencia could be prepared to let him go in the winter transfer window, per Ramiro Aldunate of Marca (translated by Padraig Whelan).

However, Pitarch has now insisted the Portugal international will not depart imminently, although he did not rule out a summer move for Cancelo, 22, per AS (via Football Espana):

"

Cancelo? Cancelo himself has told us he wants to stay. Joao is committed and doesn't want to leave. We're counting on all the players who want to be here.

I'm not Harry Potter and I don't have a magic wand to know what will happen in the summer. Joao is performing well in both a sporting and personal sense, his agent, too.

There was no pressure to accept the offers that came for him in summer and it's the same now.

"

Barca are in the market for a new right-back as Aleix Vidal has done little to impress in the position since Dani Alves' summer departure to Juventus, per Aldunate.

According to Sport, Cancelo is the main target for the Catalan giants, but they have also been eyeing Chelsea's Victor Moses, Southampton's Cedric Soares, CSKA Moscow's Mario Fernandes, AS Roma's Bruno Peres and AS Monaco's Djibril Sidibe.

As a result, if Cancelo is indeed not available in January and Barca feel they cannot wait until the summer without signing a new right-back, they may go for one of their alternate targets.

Sergi Roberto has played much of the season on the right of defence. It is not his natural position, he is traditionally a central midfielder, but he has been largely excellent, per Spanish football writer Sergi Dominguez:

If manager Luis Enrique feels he can rely on Sergi, and perhaps Vidal, to perform in the second half of the season, Barca may then wait until the summer to snap up No. 1 target Cancelo.

Meanwhile, Barcelona would reportedly have to fork out £90 million in order to sign Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho, and the Reds are preparing to offer him a new deal to prevent any moves for the Brazilian.

Per Paul Hetherington in the Daily Star Sunday, Barcelona have long been suitors of Coutinho's, and he has also drawn interest from Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain.

However, Hetherington added, the Reds have no interest in selling the currently injured playmaker and are preparing to make him their highest-paid player despite him only signing his last new deal—which expires in 2020—back in February 2015.
