Julio Jones Injury Update: Falcons WR Ruled Out for Week 15 vs. 49ers

Rob GoldbergDec 16, 2016

Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones will miss the team's upcoming matchup against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday due to a toe injury.

Falcons head coach Dan Quinn announced the news Friday, which came after Jones missed the entire week of practice.

Michael Cunningham of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Thursday that the team was planning to have Jones "push it" Friday to see what he could do, but apparently it wasn't enough to clear him for the game.

This will be the second missed game for Jones, who first suffered the injury in Week 13 against the Kansas City Chiefs. While initially believed to be turf toe, it was later revealed to be a toe sprain.

The receiver was a game-time decision for Week 14 but was unable to play. Fortunately for the Falcons, they didn't seem to miss him in a 42-14 victory over the Los Angeles Rams. Against the 1-12 49ers, Atlanta should once again remain heavy favorites despite being without one of their top players.

When healthy, Jones is among the best in the NFL at his position. Even after missing the past game, the 27-year-old leads the NFL with 1,253 receiving yards on 72 catches with five touchdowns.

Pro Football Focus rates him as the No. 2 receiver in the league this season behind only Mike Evans.

Per Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com, Mohamed Sanu is set to return at receiver to help Atlanta in Jones' absence. Taylor Gabriel will also get plenty of work in the meantime, while Nick Williams and Aldrick Robinson should earn extra snaps.
