Manchester City vs. Arsenal: Arsene Wenger's Key Pre-Match Presser Comments

Rory MarsdenDec 16, 2016

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said there is "no reason to worry" about the ongoing contract talks with Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil as he spoke ahead of the Gunners' Premier League clash with Manchester City on Sunday.

The French manager also revealed that long-term absentee Danny Welbeck is just a week away from returning to full training.

Ozil and Sanchez are both contracted to Arsenal until 2018, but recent reports have led to concerns they may not sign new deals and could depart the club, per ESPN FC's Mattias Karen.

However, Wenger moved to alleviate any worries about the superlative duo on Friday and was not appreciative of the continual questions surrounding their futures, per football writer Miguel Delaney:

The Gunners could soon have Welbeck back to complement Ozil and Sanchez in the attacking line.

The Englishman has been absent since May after undergoing knee surgery, but Wenger confirmed that he is closing in on a return to action, per Arsenal:

Aaron Ramsey is also close to being available again for the first team, but he will not be in the squad to face Pep Guardiola's City at the Etihad Stadium, per Jonathan Liew and Alistair Tweedale in the Telegraph.

"We should have approximately the same squad who went to Everton," Wenger said. "Nobody back. Aaron Ramsey’s not back, he’s the closest to come back, so we have some knocks and bruises, but they should all be available again."

Arsenal had not lost a Premier League game since the opening day of the season until they were downed 2-1 at Everton on Tuesday.

Wenger called on his players to "respond straightaway" when they come up against City, who have been in poor form of late after a brilliant start to the season, per Ben Burrows in the Mirror.

Arsenal could move four points clear of fourth-placed City if they beat them on Sunday. But the Sky Blues returned to winning ways against Watford on Wednesday with a 2-0 triumph after a run of three matches without a victory.

The corresponding fixture between Arsenal and City in the Premier League last season ended in a 2-2 draw, and it would be little surprise if the points were shared again.

However, given the form of table-topping Chelsea and the fact that Arsenal are now six points behind the Blues, Wenger is unlikely to be happy with anything other than a win.
