Troy Aikman Speaks on Jerry Jones' Comments on Tony Romo, Dak Prescott
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has continued to make odd comments suggesting Tony Romo could see the field this season, despite rookie quarterback Dak Prescott being the team's starter.
And former Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman doesn't understand Jones' motivation for making such remarks.
"I'm not sure that Tony, if it was left up to the owner, wouldn't be the starter now, just based on the comments that I've heard in the last couple weeks," Aikman said Thursday on KTCK-AM 1310 The Ticket, per the Dallas Morning News.
Questions have surfaced about Prescott's play after a few mediocre games and a loss to the New York Giants on Sunday night. While any struggles from Prescott were always likely to fan the QB controversy flames, Jones has seemingly thrown a few logs on the fire himself.
On Wednesday, when asked on 105.3 The Fan (per Kate Hairopoulos of the Dallas Morning News) about what it would take for the Cowboys to replace Prescott with Romo, he replied, "I don't have a definition for it, but you'll know it when you see it." He also called the possibility of Romo taking over for a struggling Prescott down the line a "legitimate discussion."
Last week, he mused about what it would mean if Romo, for whatever reason, stepped onto the field in the postseason, per Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News, saying, "What a story, one for the ages, if he'd step in there and this year help us win a Super Bowl on the field with his skill."
It's all left Aikman befuddled:
"If Tony ends up getting in the game at some point, great. But to dismiss what a young rookie quarterback has done -- know what would be a great story would be if a rookie quarterback takes this team to a Super Bowl championship. That'd be a great story.
Whether Romo is a part of that ultimately and gets on the field and plays, if he does that'd be great. I mean he's put a lot of time in this city and he's meant a lot to the organization. But if he doesn't and they do it a different way, then that's great, too. The bottom line is winning games, so I just don't understand it.
"
Jones responded to Aikman on his radio show on Thursday, per Clarence Hill Jr. of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram:
Jones' approach is in stark contrast to that of head coach Jason Garrett, who hasn't left any room for interpretation about who his starting quarterback is, per Hairopoulos:

While Prescott hasn't thrown for over 200 yards in three straight games and struggled against the Giants, finishing 17-of-37 for 165 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions, he's also led the Cowboys to an 11-2 record.
Aikman can't envision why Jones would say anything that potentially undercuts his young quarterback.
"I'm just really dumbfounded by the comments, and not only the first time, but why they continue," Aikman noted. "I don't understand why you would talk."
