Liverpool Transfer News: Latest Rumours on Mahmoud Dahoud and Gregoire Defrel

Gianni VerschuerenDec 14, 2016

Juventus have reportedly travelled to Germany to try to close a deal for reported Liverpool transfer target Mahmoud Dahoud, while Sassuolo's Gregoire Defrel continues to be linked with the Reds.

According to SportItalia (h/t Calciomercato's Edo Dalmonte), the Bianconeri are keen to sign both Borussia Monchengladbach's Dahoud and Schalke's Leon Goretzka, prompting the team to move early and travel to Germany.

Dahoud has been linked with several top clubs, including Manchester City and the Reds, per the Liverpool Echo's Joe Rimmer. Per the report, the Reds tried to sign Dahoud during the summer.

The young midfielder is widely regarded as one of the top talents in the Bundesliga and a future Germany international, explaining the high level of interest in his services.

His current contract is said to include a clause of less than £10 million set to become active at the end of the season. He has no plans on renewing his contract, per Dalmonte, and Gladbach could choose to cash in before the clause can be triggered.

Here's a look at some of his highlights:

The 20-year-old has exceptionally quick feet and solid vision, two traits he uses to great effect in midfield. He's an excellent playmaker in front of defence who can launch attacks in the blink of an eye and can do damage on the counter attack.

His passing range is superb, and he has flashed some scoring ability as well, particularly from long range.

Dahoud projects as a future star, so recent rumours the Reds have pulled out of the race to sign the Syrian-born midfielder came as a surprise. Jack Lusby of Bleacher Report questioned the decision:

It would be a shock if Liverpool didn't pursue Dahoud should he become available, particularly if he doesn't move in January and his low release clause kicks in. Juventus are playing it smart by attempting to agree to a deal before anyone else has a chance, although there are no guarantees for the Bianconeri.

Meanwhile, Liverpool continue to be linked with Defrel, with the latest rumours suggesting manager Jurgen Klopp will battle West Ham United for his signature, per the Liverpool Echo's Joe Rimmer.

The 25-year-old has finally found his feet with Sassuolo after struggling with Cesena for several years, and he's led the Neroverdi attack in the 2016-17 season, with Domenico Berardi spending a lot of time on the sidelines.

Defrel and Berardi formed a fantastic duo last season, with both of them using their tremendous athleticism to devastating effects. It's that raw speed and direct approach that's likely appeal to Klopp, who runs a system based around pressing and a high-octane attack, similar to Sassuolo's.

Here's a look at some highlights:

Defrel is a bit of a late bloomer, and his relatively short track record of success would make him a risky signing. While he's a nice fit at Sassuolo, his scoring record and history don't suggest he would be effective at a bigger club.

West Ham are desperate to turn around their season and could take a chance on the Frenchman, but the Reds will likely turn their attention toward other more accomplished forwards.
