Everton vs. Manchester United: Jose Mourinho's Key Pre-Match Presser Comments

Rory MarsdenDec 2, 2016

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has said Bastian Schweinsteiger has a future at Old Trafford past January after he made his first appearance for the Red Devils since March on Wednesday.

The German midfielder came on as a late substitute in United's 4-1 home EFL Cup win against West Ham United to a rapturous ovation, signalling his return to the fold after Mourinho had previously indicated he would not be picked again, per the Press Association (via the Guardian).

Ahead of United's Sunday Premier League clash with Everton, Mourinho confirmed that Schweinsteiger, 32, could still be at the club in the second half of the season, per the Times' Paul Hirst:

Per United's Twitter feed, the Portuguese manager added that the former Bayern Munich man could prove a useful player for him and said Schweinsteiger deserved the reception he got from the Old Trafford crowd: "He can help us. He is another one in the squad, and he's working to have more chances. He deserved the happiness of the last match—I like people who are determined."

United will be confident heading to Goodison Park after an excellent display against West Ham.

However, handsome cup wins this season for the Red Devils have previously been followed by disappointing league performances, so Mourinho will be wary not to continue the trend against the Toffees.

The performance against the Irons on Wednesday was noteworthy for the standout display of summer signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan and also the return to form of Anthony Martial, who netted a double.

Mourinho noted the Frenchman's work ethic having previously speculated that Martial was struggling to adapt to his style of play, per United:

Changes will need to be made for Everton from the team that started the defeat of West Ham, with former Toffee Wayne Rooney suspended for the clash.

Luke Shaw is also a doubt through injury after he was substituted at half-time against the Hammers. Mourinho confirmed to MUTV that the left-back, Eric Bailly and Chris Smalling are the only injury concerns, via United's website: "In the squad, we are in a very good position with injuries—the two central defenders and Luke is what we have."

In three fixtures against Everton last season, United won 3-0 at Goodison Park, 1-0 at Old Trafford and 2-1 in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley.

Mourinho will be desperate to keep the run going, not least to prevent Everton from leap-frogging United into sixth place in the Premier League.

Given the convincing victory over West Ham, United will be boosted going into Sunday's match. But with the Red Devils having won just one of their last seven league games, Everton, too, will be confident of claiming a victory.
